Presumptive Faith vs. Biblical Faith - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_-rPcLHFi4 Transcript: (00:00) in my study this morning there's a couple of things about faith that I wanted to share with you that the Lord had placed in my spirit and I was studying about Abraham and the Bible says that when Abraham went from ER of chales which was his place of comfort the place that he had become accustomed to all of his life was founded there in the earth of chal that was home that was mama that was Daddy that was friends that was connections that was worldly comfort that Abraham had in the her of chales but when Abraham left that place (00:45) he was not sure of his Destiny but there's one thing he was sure of his company yeah God had spoke to him Yahweh the almighty Creator had said to him leave this place and go he didn't know where he was going had no idea where he was going to wind up but he knew who was going with him there are some of you watching me today that you have heard the word leave this place and it scares the beeses out of you because this place is where you have some element of control you understand your schedule you understand what you're (01:29) in control of love but you've heard a word in your spirit to go I want to tell you if you've heard that sure word from God you don't have to concern yourself with your destiny you know I always hear people say I'm looking for my destiny I would say to you stop I would say to you quit chasing Destiny and simply walk with Yahweh God he is your destiny the place you're going to is not nearly as important as the place you're standing right now are you standing in faith or are you standing in what I refer to as presumption there is a huge difference (02:22) in faith in God and presumption in God what do we mean by that Faith true faith everything that is true faith is what we refer to as biblical faith I want to tell you everyone in this world has um a version of Faith every man woman boy and girl a child has faith in his parents men have faith in their jobs women have faith in their husbands so forth and so on everyone has Faith but there is a difference in worldly faith and biblical Faith biblical faith is simply taking God at his word when you come to True Faith you are (03:17) going to come to the word of God and know that it stands and it cannot fail that is the faith that only comes from the Holy Ghost the gift of presumption does not come from the holy ghost that comes from a carnal mind presumption believes that uh and I see everybody on Facebook they write in their profiles God's got me uh when someone does them wrong they come back with God's got this and you know that sounds good but that may not be true God's only got those that have him and that's a fact and how do you have him Yeshua said Jesus said (04:00) If any man says he loves me and doesn't keep my Commandments then that man is a liar the way that God has you is if you have God how do we have God he's first in our life in every area every Crook and every cranny every corner we can find God as our Center you know there's a good way to find out if God is first in your life now I prefer to say his name Yahweh way if you want to know if he's first in your life there's two places you can look your schedule and your checkbook oh yeah you'll always find out there the truth (04:42) of what's important in your life where you spend your resources and where you spend your time tell who or what is first in your life I hate to say this but for many of you family is first in your life a pleasing family uh many of you your job is first in your life your home is first because that's where all of your time and your resources go but I want to encourage you today to base your faith upon the word of God now what do I mean by presumption about God I'll say it like this many times people present presumption on God (05:25) as faith in God and here's a few notes that I wrote this morning that I hope will help you presumption is not Faith sometimes we have extravagant plans that we create in our own mind we did not hear from God about that we have no definite sure word from the Bible or from prayer and meditation but we create in our own minds a desire maybe it's the new car that you want that new car and God has not told you he's going to give you that car the Bible doesn't say it and you don't necessarily need it he did Pro promise (06:05) to provide your need but you've come up with a plan maybe to start a new business maybe whatever the case may be and in your own thinking you have come up with that plan but yet you never heard it from the Lord it was never given to you by a sure word of Prophecy you did not see it in the scriptures it's simply your plan now we start a process of presumption up on God and here's what I mean by that um many times people say okay this is what we're going to do and now Faith is going to make it happen for us this is called presuming (06:44) upon God it's no different than witchcraft I'll say it like this the only difference in a prayer and a spell a witchcraft spell is this witchcraft is the sin of rebellion and what I mean by that is witches are not satisfied with their lot in life they're not satisfied if something is going wrong so they cast the spell to change the circumstances and I have several friends that are Wick and Priestess and and and this is not personal but this is simply truth a spell is designed to change your circumstance it is designed to (07:25) presume uh to know what is best for you and therefore we're going to alter the elements of Earth Wind and Fire and Water we're going to alter your circumstances that's what witchcraft does witchcraft cannot say thy will be done that's the difference in a Believer a believer's prayer and a witches prayer witches pray to change the mind of God witches pray to turn their events around but a Believer prays to submit himself to the will of Yahweh to submit himself to what's best for everyone involved here's true faith and I've learned this (08:09) in my 40 Years of well 35 years of living for the almighty I've learned that true faith is when you are able to accept what is best for everyone involved that's who Yahweh is concerned for he's concerned for the entire picture not just your part of it and we have to get to the point when we pray that we honestly pray thy will be done that's true and and Bible faith for example many people will presume upon God for physical healing now we go and we maybe your child is sick or a family member is sick and you presume upon God (08:56) that he is going to heal that sickness now we do that because we misunderstand a few verses in the Bible that speaks about physical healing and we we say that this is for everyone that cannot be the case because we see in the Bible that uh even Paul had a companion that he had to leave because he was sick and he did not receive healing it is a fact that there are some cases that God does not heal so when we believe that God's going to heal someone and now we take it to a w craft level and we are determined that God is going to heal them now we (09:35) have begin changing circumstances rather than praying in faith thy will be done and being fine with that until you get to the point that you are fine with the decisions of God you've not come into true Faith you're still living in presumptive faith you know we have great Desires in our heart and I'll share one with you um of my personal uh desires that this week we had an opportunity to purchase a church building for first Harvest Ministries and we're in desperate need of a of a building we've been meeting uh like the (10:17) children of Israel from Cloud to Cloud uh in borrowed facilities and temporary meeting places and our heart's desire uh you know our human desire is to have our own home that is every man's desire well we found a building and it just looked perfect it looked like this was where we were going to be uh 4,000 square ft several acres of land and it was laid out for us to be able to finance it uh right off the bat and buy this building and when I first went I had an uneasy feeling about it uh it needed a lot of work on the building and (10:59) then I looked at some of the members as they looked at it and I did not see a settled Spirit within them and then uh but yet something inside of you the human part says yeah but man if we had our own home we could save the world we could people would know where we are we could grow see sometimes what you call growth is not what Yahweh calls growth and we just knew that this building was for us and and then there's a human part in your heart an unconquered part that says oh W our enemies will see that God is blessing us you got to be careful of the (11:35) heart it's deceitful it's very deceitful and so we just knew that this was yahweh's will the owner met with us he wanted to he offered us every option to move into that building so that we could have a home and when we left the meeting that night my wife was uneasy I was uneasy but yet then a moment kicked in where we said you know what even even though it's going to burden us financially and our every service will have to be concerned about raising the money and that's fine let's just step out in faith and do (12:09) it man that sounds good sounds brave but do you know we had not heard from the Lord we had not heard from Yahweh yet we had not a sure word that this was our property but yet notice what we said we're going to step out on faith and just bite the bullet and do it and let our Saints be burdened with having to come up with this $25,000 down payment and paying this monthly mortgage and let's let's just do it God will provide let me tell you something God will provide if God said to do it but we did not hear from the (12:47) Lord until yesterday when Yahweh spoke to me as plain as I've ever heard and said that is not your building he said to me that is not your home that is not you are not like another Ministry don't try to be like other Ministries be who I've called you to be you can reach more people through this camera around the world than you can in a building now does that mean he's never going to give us a building oh no we believe that he is but on this particular one we were being presumptive in our faith I want to encourage you today if you have heard (13:28) from the Lord hard then move if you've not stand still and be faithful into the place that you have been planted and know that when he gets ready you're going to move I want to quote a scripture from Isaiah 26 and three this is where you can place your faith in the word of God and it says this plainly you will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he has Trust usted in you that is a Bible promise that says that no matter where you are right now no matter what you're going through you can have perfect peace (14:10) that's a Bible promise place your faith right there that no matter what you're going through you can have faith that you can have perfect peace here's another Bible promise now this is biblical faith not presumptive Faith you can have faith in what I'm about to read to you in 1 Corinthians 10:13 there has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man but Yahweh is faithful who will not suffer you to be tested more than you are able to Bear but will with but will with every test make a way for you to endure that test (14:57) that you may be able to to Bear it that brothers and sisters is a Bible promise place your faith there no shaking right there you can stand on that and then finally John 10:28 and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand brothers and sisters that is God's promise Almighty Yahweh that's a promise to you you can build your faith right there when everything in your life is sinking sand know that you can place your faith in the coming day of the Lord (15:42) the Sabbath day that is coming for all of the world you know I was reading in the book of Barnabas which is an extra biblical book but has many wonderful things in it and he said that we must learn to hate the error of this day and place our love in the coming day of the Lord our faith can be assured of this the Bible says that very soon the kingdom of Yahweh is coming to this Earth with yua as the mighty king the Mighty God over this Earth that will rule and Reign for a thousand years no matter what I'm going through today I can place my faith (16:23) right there so can you life is hard but let me tell you something Yahweh is watching over your steps the Bible said that your steps are ordered of the Lord what steps the steps of a righteous man who is a righteous man anyone that has placed their faith in the Son of God and allowed him to move into their hearts and write his law upon their mind and caused him to live his life through them the life of God ladies and gentlemen we love you today today I pray that you've learned the difference between Bible faith and presumptive Faith for many of Summary

1. Abraham's departure from his place of comfort — 00:00–00:45 Vaughn begins by explaining that he had been studying Abraham that morning. He describes Ur of the Chaldees as Abraham's familiar home, where his family, friendships, connections, and worldly comforts were established. He emphasizes that Abraham left this familiar environment in response to Yahweh's instruction. Abraham did not know his final destination, but he trusted the one who had instructed him to go. 2. The difference between knowing the destination and knowing Yahweh — 00:45–01:29 Vaughn contrasts Abraham's uncertainty about his destination with his certainty about Yahweh's presence. He addresses people who believe they have received divine instruction to leave a familiar situation. He acknowledges that leaving can be frightening because familiar circumstances provide a sense of control. He teaches that those who have genuinely heard Yahweh's instruction can trust him without knowing the final outcome. 3. Stop chasing destiny and begin walking with Yahweh — 01:29–02:22 Vaughn challenges the tendency to search continually for one's destiny. He tells listeners to stop chasing destiny and simply walk with Yahweh. He declares that Yahweh himself is their destiny. He emphasizes that their present spiritual condition matters more than the location they hope to reach. He introduces the distinction between standing in faith and standing in presumption. 4. Biblical faith versus ordinary human confidence — 02:22–03:17 Vaughn explains that everyone exercises some form of faith. He gives examples involving children trusting parents, people trusting employment, and spouses trusting one another. He distinguishes these ordinary forms of confidence from biblical faith. He defines biblical faith as taking Yahweh at his word. 5. The Holy Spirit and the carnal mind — 03:17–04:00 Vaughn teaches that true faith recognizes the reliability of Yahweh's word. He attributes genuine biblical faith to the Holy Spirit. He contrasts this with presumption, which he says originates in carnal thinking. He questions popular expressions such as “God's got this” when they are spoken without genuine submission to Yahweh. 6. Love, commandments, and spiritual priorities — 04:00–04:42 Vaughn invokes Yeshua's teaching that a person who claims to know him but does not keep his commandments is a liar. He argues that genuine commitment to Yahweh requires obedience. He tells listeners to examine their schedules and checkbooks. He considers time and financial spending practical indicators of a person's priorities. 7. The danger of putting other things first — 04:42–05:25 Vaughn warns that family, employment, and property can become more important to people than Yahweh. He encourages believers to establish their faith upon Scripture. He begins explaining how presumption can be presented as faith. 8. Human plans mistaken for divine promises — 05:25–06:44 Vaughn describes people developing ambitious plans without receiving clear direction from Yahweh. He gives the example of wanting a new car. He also mentions starting a business. He distinguishes a general promise of divine provision from an assumption that Yahweh will supply a particular desired possession or opportunity. He warns against creating a plan and then declaring that faith will make it happen. 9. The comparison between presumptive prayer and witchcraft — 06:44–07:25 Vaughn makes a strong comparison between presumption and witchcraft. He characterizes witchcraft as an attempt to alter circumstances according to personal desires. He contrasts this with prayer that submits to Yahweh's will. His comparison concerns the attempt to control outcomes rather than accept divine direction. 10. Prayer as submission rather than control — 07:25–08:09 Vaughn explains that a believer should pray, “Thy will be done.” He teaches that prayer should seek what is best for everyone involved. He argues that Yahweh sees the entire situation, whereas an individual often sees only personal needs. He identifies submission as a central characteristic of true faith. 11. Accepting Yahweh's decisions — 08:09–08:56 Vaughn reflects on approximately thirty-five years of walking with Yahweh. He teaches that true faith involves accepting what Yahweh determines to be best. He emphasizes that Yahweh's concern extends beyond one individual's desires. He introduces physical healing as an example of the difference between faith and presumption. 12. Presumption concerning physical healing — 08:56–09:35 Vaughn describes believers who assume that Yahweh will heal a sick child or family member. He warns against interpreting healing passages as guaranteeing physical healing in every case. He recalls that Paul left a companion sick. He argues that some illnesses are not healed despite the faith of believers. 13. The danger of demanding a particular outcome — 09:35–10:17 Vaughn teaches that insisting upon a particular healing outcome can become presumptive. He contrasts such insistence with submission to Yahweh's will. He says believers must learn to accept Yahweh's decisions. He then begins a personal example involving a possible church property purchase. 14. The opportunity to purchase a church building — 10:17–10:59 Vaughn explains that First Harvest Ministries had been meeting in temporary and borrowed facilities. The congregation desired a permanent church home. A property became available with approximately four thousand square feet of building space and several acres of land. He explains that the financing initially appeared possible. However, the building required substantial work, and he experienced uneasiness about it. 15. The temptation to equate a building with growth — 10:59–11:35 Vaughn notices that some congregation members do not appear spiritually settled about the property. He acknowledges the appeal of having a permanent location. He describes the hope that a building could make the ministry more visible and encourage growth. He warns that what people call growth may not be what Yahweh calls growth. He also recognizes the temptation to want critics to see visible evidence of success. 16. Financial pressure and the appearance of courageous faith — 11:35–12:09 Vaughn describes the property owner's willingness to work with the ministry. He says both he and his wife remained uneasy. Despite those concerns, they considered moving forward. The proposed purchase would require a $25,000 down payment and continuing mortgage payments. Vaughn acknowledges that they were tempted to call the decision a step of faith. 17. Recognizing presumption in the building decision — 12:09–12:47 Vaughn explains that the ministry had not received clear direction from Yahweh to purchase the property. He distinguishes acting on divine instruction from assuming Yahweh will provide for a self-directed decision. He recognizes that the proposed purchase could place a significant financial burden on the congregation. He identifies the contemplated action as presumptive rather than genuinely faith-directed. 18. Yahweh's direction concerning the property — 12:47–13:28 Vaughn recounts what he believes was a clear communication from Yahweh. He says he understood that the particular building was not intended for the ministry. He believes Yahweh instructed him not to imitate other ministries. He emphasizes the ministry's ability to reach people around the world through video. He does not reject the possibility of obtaining a building later. He concludes that the proposed purchase was not the correct decision at that time. 19. Move when instructed; otherwise remain faithful — 13:28–14:10 Vaughn tells believers to move when they have received definite divine direction. When no such direction has been received, he advises remaining faithful where Yahweh has placed them. He quotes Isaiah 26:3. He emphasizes the promise of perfect peace for the person whose mind remains fixed upon Yahweh. 20. Faith in the promise of perfect peace — 14:10–14:57 Vaughn explains that perfect peace is a definite scriptural promise. He encourages listeners to place their confidence in this promise regardless of their circumstances. He then quotes 1 Corinthians 10:13. He emphasizes Yahweh's faithfulness in times of temptation and testing. 21. Yahweh's faithfulness during testing — 14:57–15:42 Vaughn explains that 1 Corinthians 10:13 provides a trustworthy basis for faith. He teaches that Yahweh will provide a way to endure testing. He then quotes John 10:28. He emphasizes Yeshua's promise of eternal life and the security of those in his hand. He contrasts these scriptural assurances with unstable human circumstances. 22. Faith in the coming kingdom — 15:42–16:23 Vaughn refers to the coming Sabbath day and kingdom of Yahweh. He mentions reading the Epistle of Barnabas, which he identifies as an extrabiblical work. He recalls its emphasis on rejecting the errors of the present age and loving the coming day of the Lord. He teaches that Yeshua will rule and reign upon the earth for a thousand years. He presents this future hope as another foundation for faith during present difficulties. 23. The righteous person's ordered steps — 16:23–17:05 Vaughn says that Yahweh watches over the steps of the righteous. He refers to the biblical teaching that a righteous person's steps are ordered by Yahweh. He defines the righteous person as someone who has placed faith in the Son of God. He describes the indwelling life of Yeshua and the writing of divine law upon the mind. He closes the main teaching by expressing the hope that listeners understand the difference between biblical faith and presumptive faith. 24. Ministry appreciation and closing blessing — 17:05–17:40 Vaughn thanks those who have supported First Harvest Ministries. He describes the ministry as a small group on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He expresses appreciation for the congregation and its supporters. He invites viewers to visit the ministry website and mentions an opportunity to donate. He concludes with a blessing invoking Yahweh's favor and protection.

Core doctrine

Dr. Shane Vaughn teaches that biblical faith and presumptive faith are fundamentally different spiritual attitudes. Biblical faith rests upon what Yahweh has actually spoken, while presumptive faith rests upon what a person wants Yahweh to do. He argues that believers frequently mistake confidence in their own plans for confidence in the promises of Yahweh. Vaughn begins with Abraham's departure from Ur of the Chaldees. Abraham left his familiar surroundings, family connections, and established comforts without knowing his ultimate destination. Vaughn emphasizes that Abraham did not know exactly where he was going, but he knew who was going with him. For Vaughn, this demonstrates that biblical faith does not require complete knowledge of the future. It requires confidence in Yahweh's presence and obedience to his instruction. He teaches that believers should stop pursuing destiny as though it were a destination separate from Yahweh. In his explanation, Yahweh himself is the believer's destiny. The most important question is not where a person will eventually arrive, but whether that person is presently standing in faith and walking with Yahweh. Vaughn distinguishes ordinary human confidence from biblical faith. People trust their parents, employers, spouses, and other sources of security. He acknowledges that such confidence is a form of faith, but teaches that biblical faith is specifically taking Yahweh at his word and trusting that his promises cannot fail. He associates genuine biblical faith with the work of the Holy Spirit. By contrast, he describes presumption as arising from the carnal mind. Presumption begins when a person develops a desire or plan and then assumes that Yahweh is obligated to accomplish it, even though the person has received no definite scriptural promise or divine instruction concerning that particular outcome. Vaughn challenges familiar religious expressions such as “God's got me” and “God's got this.” He argues that these statements can become forms of false assurance when a person has not surrendered to Yahweh. He connects genuine love for Yeshua with obedience to his commandments and insists that Yahweh must occupy first place in the believer's life. He proposes examining one's schedule and checkbook as practical ways of identifying spiritual priorities. In his teaching, time and financial resources reveal what people actually value. He warns that family, employment, property, and personal comfort can occupy a position that should belong to Yahweh. Vaughn teaches that presumption often disguises itself as spiritual courage. A person may desire a new automobile, a business opportunity, a house, or another material benefit and then announce that faith will make it happen. He argues that this is not necessarily biblical faith because Yahweh has not necessarily promised the specific thing being demanded. He makes a strong comparison between presumptive prayer and witchcraft. In his explanation, both can involve an attempt to control circumstances according to human desire. He contrasts this with the believer's prayer of submission: “Thy will be done.” This comparison is Vaughn's theological characterization and should not be treated as an independently established description of every Wiccan practice or prayer tradition. Vaughn teaches that authentic prayer seeks agreement with Yahweh's will rather than attempting to force Yahweh to agree with human plans. He emphasizes that Yahweh considers the welfare of everyone involved, whereas an individual may see only the circumstances affecting that individual. He applies this principle to physical healing. He warns against assuming that every sick person must receive physical healing in response to prayer. He refers to Paul's companion who remained sick as evidence that not every illness is removed. Vaughn does not discourage prayer for healing, but teaches that believers must submit the outcome to Yahweh rather than demanding a predetermined result. He further teaches that true faith includes accepting Yahweh's decisions, even when those decisions contradict personal desires. In his understanding, the believer's confidence should be directed toward Yahweh's character and revealed promises rather than toward guaranteed fulfillment of every personal expectation. Vaughn illustrates the teaching with First Harvest Ministries' consideration of purchasing a church building. The congregation desired a permanent meeting place and found a property that appeared suitable. Nevertheless, Vaughn and his wife experienced uneasiness about the building, its condition, and the financial burden involved. He explains that the ministry was tempted to describe the purchase as a step of faith despite having received no clear divine direction to proceed. He identifies this as the very presumption he is warning against. According to his account, Yahweh subsequently impressed upon him that the particular building was not intended for the ministry. Vaughn teaches that ministries should not imitate the outward appearance of other ministries. He believes Yahweh had called First Harvest Ministries to reach people through video and worldwide teaching rather than to assume that acquiring property was necessary for spiritual growth. He does not rule out obtaining a building in the future, but emphasizes the importance of waiting for the appropriate direction. He then identifies specific biblical promises that believers can trust without presumption. Isaiah 26:3 promises perfect peace to the person whose mind remains fixed upon Yahweh. Vaughn teaches that this peace can be trusted regardless of external circumstances. He also cites 1 Corinthians 10:13, emphasizing Yahweh's faithfulness during testing and the provision of a way to endure. He presents this as a definite biblical promise rather than a personally invented expectation. He cites John 10:28 as another trustworthy promise, emphasizing the eternal life and security Yeshua gives to his people. Vaughn teaches that believers can place their confidence in what Yeshua explicitly promises, even when their immediate circumstances remain difficult. Finally, Vaughn connects biblical faith with the coming kingdom of Yahweh. He refers to the future Sabbath age and the thousand-year reign of Yeshua as a hope that believers can hold while enduring the difficulties of the present world. The central doctrine of the sermon is that true faith trusts Yahweh's word, obeys his direction, submits to his will, and rests in his promises. Presumption, by contrast, assumes divine approval for human plans and attempts to guarantee outcomes that Yahweh has not specifically promised.
