The Assembly of Yahweh or The Assembly of the People?

Dear Partners, Have you ever stopped to consider this question: Are we the Assembly of YAHWEH, or are we the Assembly of the People? Put it another way. Are we a democracy or a republic? Are we governed by the people, or are we governed by the Law, and by the established government clearly laid out in that Law? It matters, and it matters more than almost anything else we could talk about, because the answer decides whether what we are building will stand or fall. Think about how our own nation is supposed to work. Does the President of the United States take too much power to himself? No. A Constitution grants that power to him alone, and for four years he is vested with authority that comes to him by law, not by the shifting mood of the people. The crowd does not vote on his decisions week by week. He does not lay down his office because a faction is unhappy with him. The Law put him there, the Law defines his office, and the Law is what he answers to. That is what a republic is. A democracy is a crowd. A republic is a people governed by a written law and the offices that law establishes. Now hear me carefully, because this is the whole point of this letter. Israel is a republic, not a democracy. YAHWEH gave His people a Constitution. It is called the Torah. That Torah does not put the people in charge. It establishes a government: offices, callings, an order of authority, and a Head over all of it. The men who hold those offices do not draw their authority from the votes of the congregation. They draw it from the Law of YAHWEH, and they answer to the Law of YAHWEH. We have to know this in our hearts, not merely nod at it: we are not the Assembly of the People. We are the Assembly of YAHWEH, governed by HIS provided way. Some among YAHWEH'S people have already forgotten that. Let us think about how it happens, because it never announces itself. It always comes in quietly, and it always sounds reasonable. I want you to picture a scene with me. A young man stands across the street from the Assembly. He is about thirty, sharp, well-spoken, the kind of man everyone assumes will be a leader someday. Two other men, also about thirty, well dressed and impressive, walk over and begin talking to him. They take pains to avoid the pastor. They are not there to build. They are there to lobby. Now suppose the pastor walks over and says plainly, "I know what these men are telling you." And the young man answers honestly: "Yes, Pastor, but I think they have a point. They say you take too much authority to yourself. They say the people ought to have the say-so. The people ought to vote on who leads them, and on what we believe and teach. That sounds right to me. I think we need more democracy in the Assembly." Do you hear it? It is the same question we started with, only now it is wearing a friendly face. And every one of you will one day have to answer it. So hear what the only right answer is. The real question is whether this is YAHWEH'S Assembly or the PEOPLE'S Assembly. If it is YAHWEH'S Assembly, then YAHWEH is running it, and YAHWEH is revealing what we believe and teach. YAHWEH has the say-so. He runs it through YAHSHUA the Messiah, who is the Head of the body. And YAHSHUA runs it through the men HE calls, HE prepares, and HE sets in place. Those two men across the street are getting the young man's eyes off of YAHWEH. They are leaving YAHWEH out of the picture entirely. They are looking only at people. And the moment you put YAHWEH out of His own Assembly, you have not reformed it. You have left it. That is the danger I want to set before you today. Not persecution from without. Not the courts, not the slanderers, not the ones who harass this congregation. The danger is that too many within the body of Messiah are quietly, in their own minds, putting YAHWEH out of His Assembly and trying to make it OUR Assembly. The Assembly of the People, and not the Assembly of YAHWEH. How YAHWEH Chooses Consider how YAHWEH chose a king for Israel. He sent Samuel to the house of Jesse. Jesse knew immediately which son the people would have picked. The eldest was tall, handsome, confident, articulate. He looked like a king. Samuel himself was ready to anoint him. And YAHWEH said, "No." The second son had the same bearing, the same look. "No." The third. "No." And so on down the line, until Samuel had to ask whether there were any sons left at all. "Well, there is a boy out in the field with the sheep." That boy was David. The one no committee would have chosen. The one no vote would have elevated. And YAHWEH said, "This is the one I have chosen." Then He told Samuel the principle that governs every calling in His Kingdom: "For YAHWEH seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but YAHWEH looketh on the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) Man does not see the way YAHWEH sees. Man votes for the outward appearance. YAHWEH chooses the heart. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12) "Lean not unto thine own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5) Democracy in the Assembly is precisely leaning on our own understanding. It is a room full of people looking at the outward appearance and calling the result the will of YAHWEH. How YAHWEH Has Always Led His People If this truly is the Assembly of YAHWEH, then how does He run it? The same way He has always run anything He has done through men. Everything YAHWEH purposed for His people began with one man, Abraham. Every promise, national and spiritual, came through Abraham, then Isaac, then Jacob. Not through a council. Not through a congregation raising its hands. When YAHWEH called a people out of Egypt to be His Congregation, His Assembly of the Old Covenant, He did not send them a constitution. He sent them one man, specially prepared for forty years in the wilderness: Moses. YAHWEH led Israel. He split the sea. He fed them from heaven. But the people never saw YAHWEH. They saw Moses. YAHWEH led them through the man He chose. Then Israel became organized. Captains over fifties, over hundreds, over thousands. Some of those men rose quite high. Scripture calls them "men of renown." And what did some of them do with their renown? "Now Korah, and Dathan, and Abiram, and On... rose up before Moses, with... two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown. And they gathered themselves together against Moses... and said... Ye take too much upon you... wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of YAHWEH?" (Numbers 16:1-3) Listen to the language. "Ye take too much upon you." "All the congregation are holy, every one of them." It is the most democratic-sounding speech in the entire Torah. And YAHWEH opened the earth and swallowed the men who made it. Korah was not a heathen. Korah was a Levite. He already held office. YAHWEH had already given him a place of honor. But he wanted more. He coveted Moses' seat. He wanted the say-so. And he dressed his covetousness in the robes of fairness and the voice of the people. Partners, Korah's spirit did not die in the wilderness. It is alive in every generation of YAHWEH'S people, and it always says the same thing: "Why should one man lead? Let the people decide." What Always Happens I have been in the ministry nearly forty years, and I can tell you what happens every single time men decide to take the Assembly out of YAHWEH'S hands and put it in the hands of the people. They form something new. They call it a fellowship, an association, a network. And within a short time, the ones who could not submit to YAHWEH'S order cannot submit to one another either. They fall out among themselves. Bitterness breeds bitterness. The work that was born in resentment dies of resentment. "Except YAHWEH build the house, they labour in vain that build it." (Psalm 127:1) YAHWEH is not building a house on the foundation of rebellion. He is not raising up a work whose cornerstone is "we know better than the man YAHWEH set over us." He never has, and He will not start now. And here is what I have watched happen on the other side of every such departure: when the contentious, the accusing, the bickering have gone out, the Assembly they left has peace. The ministers report it. The saints feel it. YAHWEH turns even the adversary's handiwork into a blessing for His people, because the malcontents remove themselves and the body is healed. Some sincere people are deceived for a season by those who leave. I have seen many of them come home. YAHWEH'S door is not shut to the honestly misled. But it is shut to Korah. Why This Matters for the House of Israel We are not building a denomination. We are gathering the scattered House of Israel back to Torah, back to the Sabbath, back to the Sacred Name, back to the Feasts of YAHWEH, in preparation for the return of YAHSHUA and the restoration of the Kingdom. That is not a task the flesh would ever vote for. It was never popular. It will never poll well. If the people had been consulted, Israel would still be in Egypt making bricks. A people that is being restored to Torah must also be restored to Torah order. YAHWEH has never governed His people by referendum. He governs by calling, by anointing, by the setting of men in the body as it pleases HIM, not as it pleases us. I did not become who I am by having good ideas. I became who I am by having every one of my own ideas swept out so that YAHWEH could fill the space with His truth. Ordained at fourteen, I have spent a lifetime learning that what I thought I knew was wrong and that YAHWEH'S Word was right. That is the only preparation for leadership that YAHWEH recognizes, and it is the exact opposite of a campaign. The Charge So here is where I leave you, Partners. When someone approaches you, and they will, with the smooth suggestion that the Assembly would be healthier if the people had more say, if leadership were elected, if doctrine were negotiated, I want you to recognize the voice. It is the voice from across the street. It is the voice of Korah at the door of Moses' tent. It is the voice that leaves YAHWEH out of the picture and calls the result freedom. Ask them the only question that matters: WHOSE ASSEMBLY IS THIS? If it is YAHWEH'S, then YAHWEH runs it. YAHSHUA is its Head. And His Word, not our preferences, is its doctrine. "I am the vine, ye are the branches... for without me ye can do nothing." (John 15:5) Nothing. Not a work, not a ministry, not an assembly. Apart from YAHSHUA, the most democratic congregation on earth is a room full of severed branches. Let us be the Assembly of YAHWEH. Let us not exchange it for the Assembly of the People.
