First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 1 HOW TO TRY THE SPIRITS A Doctrinal Treatise on Discernment, Messiah, the Spirit of Antichrist, and the Last Adam ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Issued from the Headquarters of First Harvest Ministries International From the Desk of Apostolic Overseer Rev. John Shane Vaughn ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 2 PURPOSE AND APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY This doctrinal treatise is issued to preserve and clarify the apostolic command given to the assemblies concerning the testing of spirits, the identity of Messiah, and the nature of antichrist deception. This document is not speculative theology. It is not philosophical abstraction. It is a settled doctrinal position rooted in Scripture and apostolic witness. Its purpose is singular: to restore the original test commanded by the Apostle John—and to expose why that test has been widely misunderstood, diluted, or replaced with ineffective substitutes. THE APOSTOLIC COMMAND: TRY THE SPIRITS "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are from YAHWEH; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." — 1 John 4:1 John does not instruct believers to test personalities, miracles, emotions, or charisma. He commands them to test spirits—because doctrine is animated by spirit, not merely by words. False prophecy does not begin with false speech. It begins with a false spirit animating orthodox language. This is precisely why deception is most dangerous when it sounds familiar. The first-century assemblies faced an enemy that did not announce itself with blasphemy. It arrived clothed in Christian vocabulary, wielding the name of Messiah, yet hollowing out His identity from within. John's test was designed to expose this infiltration. ANTICHRIST: NOT AGAINST MESSIAH—BUT ANOTHER MESSIAH The term antichrist has been gravely misunderstood by generations of believers. In Scripture, antichrist does not primarily mean against Messiah in the sense of open hostility. The Greek prefix ἀντί (anti) frequently means "in place of," "instead of," or "as a substitute." This is well-documented in Greek lexicography: • Strong's Greek Lexicon (473): "opposite, i.e., instead or because of... for, in the room of" • BDAG Greek Lexicon: "in exchange for, in place of, instead of" First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 3 • Moulton and Milligan: "By far the commonest meaning of anti is the simple 'instead of'... This shades into 'in exchange for' or 'in return for.'" An antichrist is therefore not necessarily a Messiah-denier. An antichrist is a Messiah- replacement. This is why the antichrist spirit does not arrive denying the Messiah's name. It arrives using it— while quietly redefining His origin, nature, and mission. The danger John addresses is not rejection. It is redefinition. THE HISTORICAL BATTLEFIELD: WHAT JOHN WAS FIGHTING To understand John's warning, we must stand where he stood. The Apostle John wrote near the close of the first century, ministering in Ephesus in the midst of a theological conflict with a heretic named Cerinthus. According to the church father Irenaeus (drawing from Polycarp, who was John's own disciple): "John rushed out of a bathhouse at Ephesus without bathing when he found out Cerinthus was inside, exclaiming, 'Let us fly, lest even the bathhouse fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is inside!'" What Did Cerinthus Actually Teach? According to Irenaeus (Adversus Haereses, Book I, Chapter 26, c. 180 AD), Cerinthus taught a separation theology: 1. A pre-existent "Christ-spirit" descended upon the man Yahshua at His baptism 2. This Christ-spirit left Yahshua before the crucifixion 3. Therefore the Christ never truly suffered or died—only the man Jesus did 4. Christ and Jesus were two separate entities Irenaeus records that this "Christ" was a divine emanation from the Supreme Ruler who temporarily indwelt the man Yahshua, performed miracles through Him, and then departed— leaving only the human Jesus to suffer and die. A similar error, Docetism (from the Greek dokein, "to seem"), taught that Yahshua only appeared to have a physical body—that His flesh was an illusion, a phantom, a costume worn by deity. Both heresies shared a common thread: the Messiah's life did not genuinely begin in flesh. Whether by a divine spirit descending upon an already-existing man (Cerinthus) or by deity merely appearing to have flesh (Docetism), these teachings denied that Yahshua the Messiah truly came in the flesh as the origin point of His existence. John's test was forged in this furnace. First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 4 THE APOSTOLIC TEST: "COME IN THE FLESH" "Every spirit that confesses Yahshua the Messiah as having come in the flesh is from YAHWEH, and every spirit that does not confess Yahshua the Messiah as having come in the flesh is not from YAHWEH. This is the spirit of antichrist." — 1 John 4:2–3 John is not addressing whether Yahshua had a physical body. That would have been a meaningless test in the first century. Everyone—including the heretics—acknowledged that something called "Jesus" walked the earth. He is addressing origin. The Greek phrase is ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα (en sarki elēlythota)—literally, "having come in flesh." The word choice is precise: Not "appeared" in flesh. Not "passed through" flesh. Not "wore" flesh. Came. In. Flesh. The perfect tense of ἐληλυθότα indicates a completed action with continuing results—His life began in flesh and He remains connected to that human existence. John is refuting teachings that claimed: 5. Messiah pre-existed as a conscious divine being before entering a human body 6. Flesh was merely a temporary vessel, not the origin point of His life 7. The "Christ-spirit" descended upon and then departed from the man Yahshua 8. Yahshua's humanity was not genuine or complete—not the true beginning of His existence Such teachings did not deny Messiah's importance. They replaced Him with a different version. THE SEED OF DAVID: THE BIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE The Apostle Paul and the Apostle Peter both testify to something that creates significant theological tension with traditional Christology: Paul's Testimony — Romans 1:3 "Concerning his Son Yahshua Messiah our Master, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh." The Greek: ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ κατὰ σάρκα (ek spermatos Dauid kata sarka) Let us be precise: Paul uses the word σπέρμα (sperma)—seed, sperm. This is biological language. He does not say "descendant" in a general sense. He says Yahshua was made from the seed of David according to flesh. Peter's Testimony — Acts 2:30 First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 5 "Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that YAHWEH had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Messiah to sit on his throne." The Greek: ἐκ καρποῦ τῆς ὀσφύος αὐτοῦ (ek karpou tēs osphuos autou) — "from the fruit of his loins" This is a Hebrew idiom for direct physical descent through the male line. Peter, preaching on the Day of Pentecost to a Jewish audience, declares that YAHWEH's oath to David was fulfilled in Yahshua—who came from the fruit of David's loins, according to the flesh. The Genealogical Evidence Both Matthew and Luke trace Yahshua's lineage through Joseph—not Mary. If Joseph contributed nothing biologically, these genealogies serve no purpose. You cannot inherit tribal lineage through adoption alone under Torah. The seed passes through the father. The Scriptural testimony consistently affirms that Yahshua is: "Of the seed of David according to the flesh" (Romans 1:3); "From the fruit of David's loins, according to the flesh" (Acts 2:30); Genealogically traced through Joseph in both Gospel accounts. This does not contradict a supernatural conception. It requires us to understand how that conception occurred. THE LAST ADAM: ROOT AND OFFSPRING Here we arrive at the most profound revelation concerning the identity of Yahshua the Messiah. The First Adam YAHWEH created Adam directly: He took dust (raw material), supernaturally formed a man, breathed life into him, with no human father involved. Adam was the pattern for humanity—the original template from which all mankind descended. The Last Adam Paul declares: "And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." — 1 Corinthians 15:45 Yahshua is explicitly called the Last Adam. Not "another Adam." Not "a new Adam." The Last Adam—the final, definitive, completing version of the Adamic pattern. If Yahshua truly IS the Last Adam—the same pattern as the First—then He is not merely a descendant of Adam. He is the restoration of the original Adamic template. Root and Offspring First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 6 This brings us to one of the most remarkable declarations in Scripture: "I am the Root and the Offspring of David." — Revelation 22:16 How can one man be both the root AND the offspring? OFFSPRING of David = He came through David's biological line—the seed of David according to flesh ROOT of David = He IS the original Adamic pattern from which David himself descended—the template RESTORED David came from Adam. All of David's lineage came from Adam. If Yahshua IS the Last Adam—the same Adamic pattern regenerated—then He is literally the Root from which David's entire lineage sprang. The Last Adam is not merely a descendant of the First Adam. He IS the Adamic pattern— recreated, restored, and perfected. THE SUPERNATURAL FORMATION OF THE LAST ADAM Understanding the Last Adam doctrine illuminates what happened in Mary's womb. Luke 1:35 "The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of YAHWEH." The word ἐπισκιάζω (episkiazō) — "overshadow" — is significant. This same word is used for the cloud overshadowing the tabernacle (Exodus 40:35 LXX) and the cloud on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:5). This is PRESENCE language, not sexual language. The Spirit did not impregnate Mary. He overshadowed her—His presence sanctified and superintended what was formed in her womb. The Formation What if YAHWEH did with the Last Adam what He did with the First Adam? With the First Adam: YAHWEH took raw material (dust of the ground), supernaturally formed a man, breathed life into him, and produced the original human pattern. No natural process was involved—YAHWEH simply used earthly material and acted upon it by His power. With the Last Adam: YAHWEH took Joseph's seed (the Davidic DNA—the "dust" of David's line), supernaturally formed a man in Mary's womb, the Holy Spirit overshadowed (formed, First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 7 sanctified), and produced the SAME PATTERN as the original Adam—but through the covenant line. This did not require sexual means. Just as YAHWEH was able to supernaturally use the dust of the earth to form the first man, He was able to supernaturally use the seed of a man to form the Last Adam. The power is in YAHWEH's creative act, not in natural process. He who spoke worlds into existence can certainly form a Son from Davidic seed without requiring the natural act of conception. The parallel is exact: dust for the First Adam, seed for the Last Adam—both acted upon supernaturally by the same Creator. This understanding means: Yahshua IS genuinely "of the seed of David according to the flesh." Yahshua IS genuinely "the fruit of David's loins." Both genealogies through Joseph MAKE SENSE. His life genuinely BEGAN in Mary's womb (satisfies 1 John 4:2). No pre-existent divine consciousness "descending." YAHWEH did NOT become a man—He MADE a man. The Last Adam is genuinely human—the pattern Son. YAHWEH did not impregnate Mary. YAHWEH formed His Son in her womb, using the seed of David's line, just as He formed the first man from the dust of the ground. THE THEOLOGICAL STAKES: WHY THIS MATTERS This is not an abstract doctrinal dispute. The gospel itself hangs on this point. YAHWEH did not become one of us. YAHWEH sent His Son. That Son did not descend from eternity as a conscious divine being taking a "flesh-suit." He began in the womb of a woman, conceived by the Spirit's overshadowing power, born of flesh, raised in obedience, tested in weakness, perfected through suffering, and vindicated through resurrection. If the Son did not truly begin as a man: He did not inherit Adam's condition. He did not genuinely learn obedience. He did not truly overcome temptation as we must. He cannot stand as the Last Adam. A Messiah without a human beginning cannot redeem humanity. Consider what the writer of Hebrews declares: "Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him." — Hebrews 5:8-9 You do not learn obedience if you already lived eternally in divine consciousness. You do not grow in wisdom if you were omniscient yesterday. You are not perfected if you already possessed complete knowledge and experience. First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 8 The Greek word for "perfected" is τελειόω (teleioō)—meaning "brought to completion, brought to the goal, made complete through process." This is the language of development, maturation, accomplishment—not the language of a pre-existent deity merely revealing what He always was. THE BEGINNING OF THE CREATION OF ELOHIM "These things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of Elohim." — Revelation 3:14 This declaration does not speak of Messiah as the beginning of all things in the sense of Genesis creation. It speaks of Him as the beginning of a new order—the starting point of Elohim's family, the first Son in a redeemed, glorified lineage. The word "beginning" (ἀρχή, archē) carries multiple meanings: Source or origin; Headship or preeminence; Ruler or authority; First cause. Yahshua is the "beginning" not because He was the first thing ever created, but because He is the first of a kind—the first human Son to fully overcome, to be perfected through obedience, to be glorified, and to be enthroned by YAHWEH. This aligns perfectly with the broader apostolic witness: Firstborn among many brothers (Romans 8:29); Firstfruits from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:20); Captain (Author) of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10). A firstborn is not the only son. He is the pattern son—the one who goes first. THE CAPTAIN OF SALVATION AND THE ELOHIM- FAMILY Scripture calls Yahshua the Captain (Greek: ἀρχηγός, archēgos) of our salvation. This is a military term. A captain goes first. He enters the battle before the rest, bears the cost of conflict, secures victory, and then leads others through the same path. "For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings." — Hebrews 2:10 Yahshua did not reclaim a throne He once possessed. He was granted one because He overcame. "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne." First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 9 — Revelation 3:21 Anyone can reclaim a throne. Only an overcomer can be granted one. This is why heaven does not declare, "You have returned!" Heaven declares: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!" — Revelation 5:12 Worthy is not memory. Worthy is victory. And the purpose of that victory is clear: to bring many sons into glory (Hebrews 2:10). Redemption is not merely rescue from judgment. It is family formation. YAHWEH is producing sons. WHY THE FALSE MESSIAH FAILS An alternative Messiah who pre-exists as a conscious divine being and merely returns to glory: • Does not pioneer obedience—He already possessed divine knowledge • Does not model overcoming—He merely resumed prior status • Does not establish sonship—He bypasses the human process • Does not open the way for shared glory—He closes the door behind Himself He bypasses humanity instead of redeeming it. Such a Messiah may be worshiped—but He cannot lead sons through. Such a Messiah may be exalted—but He cannot be their elder brother. Such a Messiah may inspire devotion—but He cannot qualify as the Last Adam who succeeded where the first Adam failed. The throne was not reclaimed. It was granted. And this is exactly why John draws blood over this issue. Because once you move the Son's beginning out of the womb and into eternity, you do not elevate Him—you erase the gospel. THE FIRST JOHN CONFIRMATION John, knowing the importance of this truth, pounds the table in his opening verses: "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life..." — 1 John 1:1 "We touched Him. He bled. He tired. He learned. He obeyed. He died." First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 10 This is not the language of illusion. This is not the language of pre-existent deity merely visiting flesh. This is the testimony of men who witnessed a human life from beginning to end. And John seals this testimony with the most sobering warning in his letters: "For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Yahshua Messiah as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." — 2 John 7 The antichrist spirit does not shout, "There is no Messiah!" It whispers, "Here is a better one." THE FINAL TEST The spirits are not tested by sincerity. They are not tested by passion. They are not tested by how loudly the name "Yahshua" is spoken. They are tested by this question: Did the Son of YAHWEH truly begin His life in the flesh—formed supernaturally from the seed of David—overcome as a man, and become the firstborn of a new creation of sons? Any spirit that answers otherwise—no matter how ancient, eloquent, or popular—is not from YAHWEH. This is not optional doctrine. This is the apostolic line. This is how the spirits are tried. SUMMARY OF DOCTRINAL POSITIONS 9. YAHWEH did not become a man. YAHWEH sent His Son, who began His life in the womb of a woman. 10. Yahshua's existence began in flesh. He did not pre-exist as a conscious divine being who descended to earth. 11. The term "antichrist" means "another Christ"—a substitute or replacement, not merely an opponent. 12. John's test in 1 John 4:2-3 targets teachings that deny Yahshua's genuine human origin, not teachings that deny His historical existence. 13. Yahshua is "the beginning of the creation of Elohim" as the first of a new order—the pattern Son, the firstborn among many brothers. 14. Yahshua learned obedience, was perfected through suffering, and was granted a throne because He overcame—not because He returned to prior divine status. 15. Yahshua is the Last Adam—the same Adamic pattern supernaturally formed, this time from the seed of David through Joseph's line. First Harvest Ministries International — Doctrinal Treatise Page 11 16. Yahshua is both Root and Offspring of David—Offspring through biological descent from David's seed, Root as the restored Adamic pattern from which David himself descended. 17. The purpose of Yahshua's victory is to bring many sons into glory—making redemption a matter of family formation, not merely legal transaction. 18. Any Christology that places Yahshua's beginning before His conception undermines the gospel by separating Him from the Adamic humanity He came to redeem. CONCLUSION The Apostle John, who leaned on the Master's chest, who watched Him die, who touched His resurrected body, left the assemblies one definitive test. Not a test of miracles. Not a test of charisma. Not a test of sincerity. A test of origin. Does this spirit confess that Yahshua the Messiah has come in the flesh—that His life truly began where ours begins? If yes, it is from YAHWEH. If no, it is the spirit of antichrist. The Son who went first now calls others to follow. The Captain who overcame now leads many to glory. The Firstborn from the dead now multiplies the family of YAHWEH. He did not reclaim a throne. He earned one. And He holds the door open behind Him. He is the Root and Offspring of David. He is the Last Adam—the pattern restored. He is the Beginning of the Creation of Elohim. And in Him, many sons shall come to glory. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Issued under apostolic authority for the edification and protection of the saints. Rev.
