It’s diagnosis. And this week—on a public beach in Sydney, under summer skies, while children held sparklers and families lit candles—we watched that diagnosis become a death certificate. Because civilizations don’t collapse first by bullets. They collapse first by language. They fall when leaders grow afraid of truth and begin laundering words —renaming reality until the public can no longer see what it’s looking at. Evil doesn’t vanish when it’s renamed. It just becomes patient. And that is exactly what unfolded after Bondi Beach. THE FACTS Let’s start where every honest society must begin—with the facts. Not the spin. Not the euphemisms. Not the “context.” On Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, nearly one thousand Jewish people gathered at Archer Park near Bondi Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, for “Chanukah by the Sea”—a joyful public celebration hosted by Chabad of Bondi marking the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. A father and son—Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24)— positioned themselves on a footbridge overlooking the crowd. They opened fire with long-barreled rifles. When the shooting finally stopped, fifteen people lay dead. One attacker was killed by police. Sixteen souls departed that beach. Forty two others were rushed to hospitals across Sydney, some in critical condition, including children. Among the murdered: Matilda, a 10-year-old girl enjoying the festivities with her family Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, a father of five who organized the very celebration where he died Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, 39, father of four, a pillar of Sydney’s Jewish community Boris and Sofia Gurman, a Russian-Jewish couple who died after heroically attempting to disarm one of the gunmen Reuven Morrison, 62, who threw objects at the attackers before being shot down And Alexander Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor Read that last one again. A Holocaust survivor—murdered at a Hanukkah celebration—in 2025. I am not equating eras. I am naming a spirit. The machinery is different. The malice is identical. Here is what police found in the attackers’ vehicle: Two homemade ISIS flags Multiple improvised explosive devices Active bombs ready for detonation This was not random violence. This was not a “gun incident.” This was liturgical terror—a planned religious massacre with backup explosives and a signature written in Jewish blood. By casualty count, it stands as Australia’s deadliest terror attack in modern history—and by target, the worst antisemitic massacre on Australian soil. In footage broadcast worldwide, a 43-year-old Syrian-Australian man named Ahmed al-Ahmed was recorded doing something extraordinary. As bullets flew and bodies fell, this Muslim shopkeeper—a father of two young daughters—crouched behind parked cars, then launched himself at one of the gunmen. He wrestled the rifle from the attacker’s hands. He turned the weapon on the terrorist, forcing him to retreat. He was shot multiple times in the process. Before charging the gunman, al-Ahmed reportedly told his cousin: “I’m going to die… Tell my family I saved people’s lives.” His father later said: “When he did what he did, he wasn’t thinking about the background of the people he’s saving. He doesn’t discriminate between one nationality and another.” This man—a Muslim from Idlib, Syria—risked his life to save Jewish families celebrating their faith. His courage prevented the death toll from climbing even higher. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called it “the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen.” President Trump called him “a very, very brave person.” Even Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged: “We saw an action of a brave man—turns out a Muslim brave man, and I salute him.” There are calls in Israel for Ahmed al-Ahmed to be recognized as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations”—an honor reserved for non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jewish people during the Holocaust. In the blackest night, stars still shine. Ahmed al-Ahmed is one such star. Let no one forget his name. But heroism should not have been necessary. And the question demands asking: Why was this massacre thinkable in the first place? THE RESPONSE Now watch what happens next—because the response exposes the rot. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians” and acknowledged that it was “motivated by Islamic State ideology.” Then came the phrase—the one that collapses under its own weight: “An extreme perversion of Islam.” Stop right there. That sentence is not analysis. It is anesthesia. It tells the public how to interpret the event before the public can ask why it happened. Because once something is labeled a perversion: The texts become off-limits The slogans no longer matter The doctrinal ecosystem disappears The pattern becomes impolite to notice But here is the problem that makes that phrase implode: The men who commit these acts do not believe they are perverting anything. They believe they are obeying. Which means: That sentence was never meant to describe the attackers. It was meant to calm the audience and shut down inquiry. That is the thesis of the modern West. Linguistic sedation as statecraft. And right on cue—within hours—the national conversation pivoted to gun control. Australia. The country that dismantled civilian firearm ownership after Port Arthur in 1996. The country with some of the strictest gun laws on Earth. And their response to Islamic terrorism targeting Jews is... more gun laws. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. When the only answer you’re allowed to give is “gun control,” every massacre becomes an argument for disarmament—even when the terrorists brought bombs in their vehicle. THE GUILTY MEN Let me tell you something that should make your blood boil. Yes—Sajid and Naveed Akram pulled the triggers. They are murderers. They bear the guilt of blood. But their attack was encouraged—enabled—fertilized—made culturally thinkable—by men who will never face a courtroom. Violence requires permission before it requires weapons. By “permission structure,” I mean this: the web of signals—speeches, policies, recognitions, silences—that tells unstable minds their grievances are legitimate and their targets are acceptable. It’s not conspiracy. It’s climate. Men like: Anthony Albanese of Australia Keir Starmer of Britain Emmanuel Macron of France Bureaucrats at the United Nations Not guilty of pulling the trigger—guilty of creating the permission structure. These leaders issue platitudes. “Antisemitism has no place in our society.” But clearly antisemitism does have a place in their societies—and that place is right at the top. How? By spreading antisemitic lies about Israel. By laundering Hamas propaganda as journalism. By accusing Israel of deliberately starving children. By accusing the IDF of targeting civilians. By repeating casualty figures supplied by a terrorist organization as unquestioned fact. They could have spoken truth. They could have reminded the world that no modern military has done more to avoid civilian casualties in urban warfare than the Israel Defense Forces—while fighting an enemy that hides behind civilians and benefits from their deaths. They chose not to. Instead, they recognized a Palestinian state. After October 7, 2023—after the slaughter of 1,150 Israelis, including 36 children—they rewarded the perpetrators. They told the world: “Terrorism works.” Anthony Albanese recognized Palestine in September 2025. Keir Starmer’s government recognized Palestine. Emmanuel Macron recognized Palestine. And then they expressed shock when Jews were murdered at a Hanukkah celebration. THE WARNING THAT WAS IGNORED In August 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote directly to Albanese: “Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on the antisemitic fire. It rewards Hamas terrorists. It emboldens those who menace Australian Jews and encourages the Jew hatred now stalking your streets… Antisemitism is a cancer. It spreads when leaders stay silent; it retreats when leaders act. You must replace weakness with action.” Albanese ignored him. Netanyahu had warned. Albanese had chosen. And four months later, the bill came due in blood. After the massacre, Netanyahu responded: “You replaced weakness with weakness and appeasement with more appeasement… You did nothing to stop the spread of antisemitism in Australia. You did nothing to curb the cancer cells that were growing inside your country. You took no action. You let the disease spread.” That is not rhetoric. That is an autopsy report. THE RABBI’S LETTER In September 2025, Rabbi Eli Schlanger wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Albanese on Facebook: “As a Rabbi in Sydney, I implore you not to betray the Jewish people and not G-d Himself. This land was given by G-d to Abraham, then to his son Isaac, and then to Jacob, to be the eternal homeland of the Jewish people. Throughout history, Jews have been torn from their land again and again by leaders who are now remembered with contempt in the pages of history. Today, you have the opportunity to stand on the side of truth and righteousness. By rescinding this act of betrayal, you will not only honor the Jewish people and our heritage, but also stand with the word of G-d.” Albanese never replied. Rabbi Eli Schlanger was murdered at Bondi Beach. Three months after writing that letter. At an event he himself had organized. He was a father of five. His youngest son had just been circumcised weeks before. History will record that the warnings were written, delivered, and ignored—and that the blood followed exactly as promised. GLOBALIZE THE INTIFADA In recent days, protesters in Britain marched under banners reading: GLOBALIZE THE INTIFADA That is not a slogan. It is an instruction set. It means: What happens to Jews in Israel should happen to Jews everywhere. Bondi Beach. Boulder, Colorado. Washington, D.C. Every synagogue. Every Jewish school. Every Hanukkah celebration. And Western leaders have allowed these marches for years—calling them “free speech.” But when Jews gather peacefully, they get slaughtered. That is what “Globalize the Intifada” looks like in practice. This week, following the Bondi massacre, British police chiefs finally announced that those chanting “Globalize the Intifada” will face arrest. London’s Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley declared: “Violent acts have taken place, the context has changed—words have meaning and consequence. We will act decisively and make arrests.” Now they act. After the blood. After the warning signs were painted on synagogue walls and screamed through megaphones for years. The Board of Deputies of British Jews responded: “We have long warned that people chanting slogans like ‘globalize the intifada’ are inciting violence.” They warned. They were ignored. Now they bury their dead. THE VAST MAJORITY LIE Here comes the rhetorical sedative: “The vast majority of Muslims are not extremists.” Fine. Suppose that’s true. But “not extremist” does not mean “actively opposed.” Every movement runs on three fuels: 1. Zealots who act 2. Sympathizers who justify 3. Silencers who make resistance costly A minority acts. A larger circle justifies. A vast sea of silence makes opposition dangerous. Statistics don’t stop ideology. They anesthetize the public. That’s how civilizations die—not from the zealots alone, but from the silence that surrounds them. THE PERMISSION STRUCTURE ON THE RIGHT And here’s the part conservative media doesn’t want to hear. When figures like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens flirt with antisemitic tropes—whether intentionally or not—they widen the permission structure. Influence without restraint is not courage. It is negligence. When antisemitic ideas are mainstreamed as “just asking questions,” unstable minds take them to their logical conclusion. Speech shapes thought. Thought shapes permission. Permission shapes action. That is how pamphlets start revolutions. And how podcasts can start pogroms. The Right does itself no favors by tolerating what it should condemn. BLOOD TOUCHETH BLOOD The prophet Hosea diagnosed our moment nearly three thousand years ago: “By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.” — Hosea 4:2 Bondi Beach. October 7th. Boulder. Paris. Pittsburgh. Blood touching blood. Why? Because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of the Almighty in the land. When a society abandons truth, it loses the ability to name evil. When it loses mercy, it cannot protect the innocent. When it forgets the Creator, it worships the creature—and the creature is savage. THE PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR There is no materialist explanation for antisemitism. There never has been. Jews have been hated when they were rich and when they were poor. When they lived apart and when they assimilated. When they had power and when they were powerless. When they had a nation and when they were scattered. The hatred is irrational because it is not of this world. Scripture names the source: “The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” — Ephesians 2:2 A broadcaster of hatred. A deceiver of nations. An ancient spirit that despises the people through whom YAHWEH chose to bring His Word, His Law, and His Messiah into the world. Remove the spiritual dimension, and antisemitism becomes inexplicable. Acknowledge it, and it becomes tragically predictable. THE ONLY EXIT The solution is not gun laws. Australia already tried that—and fifteen Jews still lie dead. The solution is not better slogans. Or tighter registers. Or more platitudes from politicians who have been enabling hatred for years. The solution is turning. “Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?” — Ezekiel 33:11 Civilizations that refuse to turn do not survive. They anesthetize themselves with language until blood touches blood again. For leaders: It means speaking truth about the nature of the threat. It means ending the recognition of terrorist-adjacent states. It means treating antisemitism as what it is—not a political inconvenience but a spiritual malignancy that destroys everything it touches. For citizens: It means refusing the sedatives. Refusing to let language be laundered. Refusing to pretend that “globalize the intifada” means anything other than “murder Jews worldwide.” For the faithful: It means prayer, vigilance, and the courage to name what we see—even when naming it costs us. THE LIGHT THAT REFUSES TO DIE Rabbi Eli Schlanger’s last post on social media, from Hanukkah 2024, said the “best response to combat antisemitism” is to display more menorahs—including electric ones on top of cars. In the video, he can be seen smiling and dancing. One year later, he was murdered for doing exactly that. But here is what the terrorists failed to understand: You cannot murder light. The menorah represents a miracle—oil that should have lasted one day burning for eight. It represents the triumph of the few over the many, the pure over the impure, the righteous over the wicked. On the night of the massacre, the Sydney Opera House lit its iconic sails with a giant menorah—a nine-branched candelabrum glowing over the harbor in defiance of those who would extinguish Jewish life. The terrorists brought rifles and bombs. The Jewish people brought candles. And the candles will still be burning long after the terrorists are dust.
