(421) "All worked up over make up" - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlhJL4-ZeFM Transcript: (00:00) would you get your Bibles with me I want to do a quick study of the scriptures on a subject that I've never dealt with before only because I don't like dealing with these kinds of subjects I prefer to just leave this up to people uh to decide on their owns but several people over the course of the years have asked me to address this issue and so we are just going to do it to the best of our ability and again never believe anything I teach get your Bible out with us and let's do a serious study on the subject of women and (00:44) makeup and jewelry yes I know why I have this kind of a subject well because it is uh it's very disturbing to some women they want Bible answers because they do not want to be in Rebellion they sincerely want to obey yahweh's word but the truth is trying to find out what yahweh's word says about makeup and jewelry on ladies so get your Bibles and let's have some fun we're going to study the scriptures together to see if these things be so all right so let's get straight to work now there's a couple of arguments against wearing jewelry and (01:30) makeup now let me preface this by saying I grew up in a church that uh makeup was not allowed jewelry was not allowed unless it was a Rolex watch but that wasn't considered jewelry for somehow but anyway none of these things were allowed and many times the reasoning behind it was well intentioned um and here's some of the arguments against A lady wearing makeup especially a Christian lady or jewelry number one uh pagans wore jewelry and makeup so therefore we should not do it number two Moses made the Israelites (02:15) drink water with gold dust in it from their jewelry so surely this is a Biblical uh caution against Jewelry Number Three jewelry and looking nice only serves the desires of the flesh feeding into vanity which is a sin all right that's number three let's go to number four another argument against jewelry and makeup jewelry and makeup is only worn by prostitutes Jezebel and others seeking the wrong kind of attention number five our Beauty should come from the inside and not the outside adornment well you men folks better get (03:01) rid of some of those suits anyway let's get to the scriptures and we won't uh delay the point any longer let's start with the first claim that pagans wore jewelry and they wore makeup here is the argument the pagans wore jewelry the pagans wear makeup and brother V you and your church are dead set against those pagans so why are you not as adamant about jewelry and makeup if we know that God says not to do what the pagans did well they also brush their teeth too they also go to the restroom they also eat (03:45) so we're going to deal with this argument from the scriptures but primarily we have to keep this in mind the main context when it comes to Pagan practices that we have to stick with is only what the word of God tells us to do now the truth is if you just say it well the pagans did it well that's good logic and that gives me a reason to study this subject and you should study it yourself but you see that's not quite what we have not really not when we start studying that's really not the situation ation why because to make such a (04:33) statement removes the context of what Yahweh was saying concerning the pagans go with me to Deuteronomy 12 and verse 4 the only Pagan practices that were condemned by Yahweh was those practices having to do with the worship of false gods Deuteronomy 12:4 you shall not worship Yahweh your Elohim or your God in that way I want you to notice anytime Yahweh is condemning paganism it always has to do with the way they worshiped their gods and then us trying to bring that same type of worship to our god Yahweh (05:27) there are holidays there which is all religious festivals celebrating them doing the things that related to worship now let's go to Deuteronomy 12 and 31 get your Bibles read these scriptures for yourself pause the video while you find the scripture Deuteronomy 12:31 you shall not worship Yahweh your God in that way for every abominable thing Yahweh hates they have done for their gods for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods do you see the context when it comes to condemning pagans it is not (06:16) condemning uh everything they do like I said they brush their teeth uh they eat so we cannot make the argument well the pagans did that so we're not going to have anything to do with no only when it comes to their forms of worship of their false gods finally let's go to Jeremiah chapter 10 and uh see what the scripture says thus says Yahweh learn not the way of the Nations nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them it's easy to see how these two verses in Deuteronomy do not (07:02) contextually apply to the understanding that if pagans wear jewelry then we shouldn't wear jewelry both of those verses are relating to the worship of Yahweh both of them completely not to the everyday wearing of jewelry for example uh pagans uh wear bobby pins in their hair or maybe they wear headbands or or flowers in their hair or but not in their worship just in their daily life but what God don't hate pagans God hates Pagan worship and then attributing that Pagan worship to himself but you see the preceding chapter all of this is about the way they (07:57) worship and and and we can't can not say that we can't wear jewelry in worship because the high priest had on more jewelry than anybody whenever he was worshiping Yahweh so now let's go to Jeremiah 10:2 where we just read where it says learn not the way of the Nations don't be dismayed by the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them if we continue reading the same passage we see that this is again relating to the worship of Yahweh and idol worship the preceding chapters about what's going to happen to Israel because they have gone after other gods and were not living according to the (08:43) word of Yahweh none of these verses that we've just read when taken in their original context support the idea that yahweh's people cannot wear jewelry or makeup let's continue our scripture study let's go to Exodus 32 and verse 20 now in this verse uh we see that Moses he took the calf Exodus 32 and 20 that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to a powder and Scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it verse uh chapter 33 of Exodus vers vers 5 and Yahweh said to Moses say to the people of Israel you are a stiff necked people if for a single moment I (09:37) should go up among you I would consume you so now take off your ornaments that I may know what to do with you now it is supposedly believed that this says that we cannot wear jewelry because Israel they burned their jewelry and he made them drink it again that's just not correct please read your Bible in context let's determine the context of this statement in Exodus 32 and 33 in both chapters we find oursel at the worship of a false god a golden calf these events occur right after Mount siia right after the (10:24) Ten Commandments are given uh the Israelites remember had just just left Egypt and what did Yahweh give to them while they were leaving Egypt all the jewelry of the Egyptians they plundered the Egyptians remember they had gold jewelry the wealth of the wicked the Egyptians they had took to them as a blessing from Yahweh but they used some of that blessing to create a golden calf to create a false god and to create Pagan worship rather than Godly worship now when Moses came down from that mountain he was upset with them understandably so that (11:16) is why he melted the golden calf threw it in the fire burned it to a powder ashes of gold is all that were left in other words they took yahweh's blessing turned it into a punishment that's what Yahweh said he would do if we did not obey his Commandments he would curse our blessing that's a powerful verse you need to read that but this was not a Prohibition against wearing jewelry quite the opposite it was Yahweh that told them to wear the beautiful Jewels it was Yahweh that gave them the jewelry they were permitted to wear it they were instructed to wear it (12:00) to display the blessings of their God if jewelry was to be prohibited from that time forward then we see this sin being committed throughout the rest of the scriptures including Yahweh when he adorns his bride now listen we know that Yahweh gave them as ornaments of his Blessing that cannot be argued you cannot argue that now let's look at Jeremiah 4 and verse 30 this is another scripture that we used to preach against jewelry for many many years Jeremiah 4:30 and you oh desolate one what do you mean that you dress in Scarlet you D your Dorn yourself with ornaments of gold you (12:56) enlarge your eyes with paint in vain you beautify yourself your lovers despise you they seek your life see if you read that verse at face value man you could preach a sermon against painting your eyes and uh dressing in scarlet and all of these things we we can make a case against it against vanity however there's a difference between wearing jewelry or makeup to f feel pretty or to feel clean and attractive and nice there's a difference in that to make yourself presentable and being vain or Desiring (13:42) to flaunt your wealth there is a difference there's a big difference there's two purposes in jewelry and makeup one is the wrong purpose one is the right purpose what is Vanity according to the Random House dictionary vanity can be defined as excessive pride in one's appearance one's qualities and abilities vanity for the sake of vanity shows a heart or a desire that's not following the Creator the sin is not makeup the sin is not jewelry the sin is Vanity and I know brothers and sisters from personal experience at some camp meetings I've (14:31) been to there's been plenty of vanity without a speck of gold anywhere plenty of vanity without any uh Maybelline mascara anywhere oh but the vanity the vanity see the sin is Vanity not the elements that can bring vanity but the vanity that seeks the elements a a bride makes herself beautiful on her wedding day she adorns herself dare say she makes herself attractive and beautiful does she not do that is that evil no not at all she's doing it for herself and her groom she has no ill intentions there's no other man on that wedding day she's trying to attract (15:25) except her husband and to make herself feel beautiful this is the difference when one is serving God faithfully and those that are not those that are not they use it for hotess rather than Beauty but as I told you earlier that we see Yahweh in the Bible making his bride beautiful adorning her giving her beauty making her beauty God loves Beauty God created the gold and the jewelry God created the beauty he loves Beauty amen therefore makeup or jewelry is not a sin hotess and vanity is a sin and you can turn a Rolex watch into hotess or vanity it is the (16:25) heart and the desire Behind these things things that dictate whether or not something is sinful let's look at Queen Esther Queen Esther was she showing an excessive pride in her appearance when she dressed so nicely and wore makeup to meet the king was she a prostitute was she vain or was she simply being what she was created to be beautiful in Jeremiah the context of the whole of the chapter that we just read chapter 4 where we read about the the painting of the eyes and this all when the whole context is about Israel needing to turn back from their ways (17:16) lest they be destroyed that's the context judgment was coming upon Israel it was going to be laid to waste it was going to become desolate no amount of beautifying no no amount of makeup no amount of jewelry none of that was going to make the land and the people more desirable this is the context of Jeremiah 4:30 it's not about wearing a ring or a necklace or makeup at all get the context right and you'll get your sermon right now let's go to the next argument argument number two jewelry and makeup is only warned by prostitutes and others seeking the wrong kind of attention it's true prostitutes wear (18:07) makeup they wear jewelry they even seek the wrong type of attention however got a question for you does that mean anyone that wears makeup or wears jewelry is a prostitute are seeking the wrong kind of attention of course not let's look at these verses Ezekiel 23 and: 40 get your Bible and read it Ezekiel 23 and 40 they even sent for men to come from afar to whom a messenger was sent and behold they came for them you bathed yourself painted your eyes and adorned yourself with ornaments shame shame shame but you see again let's look at the context of this verse if you just read that one verse see they painted their eyes brother Von well guess what (19:05) else they did they took a bath Vanity Vanity they bathed bathing is a good thing it's not evil just because it's used to beautify oneself to make one feel better about themsel but no in this verse Yahweh is once again speaking about how Israel had been playing the Harlot and that they had turned from their God and instead turned to the other nations during this period Yahweh does speak about how he will take away their jewelry and tear their clothing notice he was not going to take their jewelry away before they played the Harlot no he gave them that jewelry he's taking away their beauty because they have defile (19:53) their true beauty their love for him he is not condemning the wearing of jewelry and makeup but rather removing some of their beauty what about the prostitute or the Harlot aspect of this verse now I agree with you that playing the Harlot they dressed up as a harlot but they are not the only ones who get dressed up look again at Queen Esther who I was adorned with makeup and Royal robes let's go to Esther chap 2 in verse 9 Esther 2 and9 read it in your Bible and the young woman pleased him and won his favor and he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and her portion of food and (20:45) with seven chosen women from the king's Palace and advanced her and her young women to the best place in the herum now this was prior to her becoming Queen we see that Esther was given makeup to wear but we see no mention of this being a sin why because there's no mention of it in the Torah there was never a Prohibition against the wearing of jewelry or makeup in the law of God at all so therefore she was not committing a sin in the church I grew up in it was a sin to wear makeup it was a sin to wear Je even this wedding ring it (21:30) was a sin sadly we didn't really know what a sin was a sin is breaking the law of God and there was no Prohibition in the law of God against the wearing of makeup or jewelry now was Esther Queen Esther was she seeking the wrong kind of attention because she wore makeup or Jewels not at all she was applying to be the wife of the king in scripture being a prostitute or a harlot is not about what you wear it has to do with your behavior not your appearance the appearance is an after effect of the behavior if we apply the same logic regarding the clothing to other things related to the Harlot then (22:19) it's likely we all have to make some changes oh yeah absolutely you see here's the problem brother Von Jezebel wore makeup well guess what else she probably wore she probably wore dresses too yeah so does that make everyone that wears a dress a harlot hardly hardly hardly hardly let's see what Proverbs Chapter 7 has to say Proverbs 7 and10 now this is speaking about a harlot an adulterous woman and verse 10 shows us that she's dressed like a prostitute verse 16 and 17 shows us other things she has done but you won't (23:02) see any condemnation of her dress her makeup or her jewelry let's read it Proverbs 7:10 and behold the woman meets him dressed as a prostitute Wy of heart verse 16 I have spread my couch with coverings colored Linens from Egyptian linen I have perfumed my bed with myrr aloes and cinnamon now that is the character or the qualities or the characteristics of a prostitute so we need to quit covering our beds with nice sheets that's what prostitutes do and no more essential oils of cinnamon and aloe and myrr (23:53) that's what prostitutes do and no more um perfume no more cologne why prostitutes wear perfume of course they do but with the wrong intention let's go to Proverbs Chapter 5 speaks of a harlot and note what we are being warned to look for in the Harlot Proverbs 53-6 for the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey and Her speech is smoother than oil but in the end she is bitter as wormwood sharp as a two-edged sword her feet go down to death her steps follow the path to shol she does not Ponder the path of Life her ways wonder and she does not know it what three things are we warned about in these verses (24:50) makeup jewelry clothes no not at all we're worn of what really matters to Yahweh number one we're warned of her words her actions and her thoughts oh yeah see that's what God hates is evil words evil actions and evil thoughts not a little paint on your face or a ring on your finger no but did you notice in that verse we just read what was absent from all those warnings there was no warning warning against wearing jewelry or makeup not at all this is the pattern in scripture whenever harlets or prostitutes are mentioned we are to be aware of them (25:40) because of their actions and we're following them will lead us it is not mentioned to not wear jewelry because a harlot wears jewelry no a harlot has ill intentions now in a few minutes I'm going to go over some scriptures that show you uh that that God loves uh the beauty of the jewels and we're going to show you some instances where jewelry is worn by other people that are not harlots to further illustrate the futility of this argument I want to talk about a final thought before we go to the next point if a young girl wants to dress up and play dress up and look pretty and (26:26) she puts on a little makeup or her M's uh you know pearls is she trying to be a prostitute no neither is the grown lady that puts on a few pearls and maybe a little makeup she's not trying to be a prostitute she's probably trying to be beautiful for her husband and actually if the truth be known pastors the husband is the pastor of his home if he finds his wife desirable with that then you need to leave his wife alone and and let him be the pastor of his home wearing jewelry or makeup does not mean a woman is looking for (27:04) inappropriate attention any more than a man wearing jeans and a t-shirt is looking for inappropriate attention finally the last argument against jewelry and makeup our Beauty should come from inside brother Von not our outside adornment I agree with you completely Beauty should be something found on the inside as we mentioned earlier in this teaching but you know in my home here it's beautiful Insight my wife done a superb job of making it a home it is beautiful inside but you know we didn't forget the (27:42) outside either we wanted the outside to reflect the inside and so therefore we put a little paint on the barn if you will and uh there was no harm done now both inside and outside look beautiful but you see it does not have to be an either or situation between an internal or an external beauty to support that statement that beauty should only come from the inside Paul and Peter is the ones that the modern Church the modern Church quotes the Holiness Church loves 1 Timothy 2 and 9-10 let's go read it likewise also (28:22) that women should Adorn themselves in modest apparel with modesty and selfcontrol control not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire it's funny how we preach against the gold and the pearls but them dresses from Neiman Marcus right amen see how see how we do but with that but with what is proper for women who profess godliness with good works now let's go to 1 Peter 3 and 3-5 here's another scripture that seems to tell the women to look homely and you know just here here's the scripture we use and we're going to talk about it 1 Peter 3 and 3-5 do not let your adorning be (29:11) external the braiding of the hair and putting on of gold jewelry or the clothing you wear now what's funny here we tell people to take off their jewelry because of this verse but we don't tell them to take off their clothes their nice clothes because of this verse just get it right preach it right or Don't Preach it at all but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet Spirit which in God's sight is very precious for this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to Adorn themselves by submitting to their own (29:54) husbands amen both of these statements that we just read 1 Timothy 2:9-10 1 Peter 3 and 3-5 both of them indicate that a woman's Beauty should not be based on what's adorning her her adornment should be modest and not flashy we do agree with this however we do not believe that this is an instruction from God forbidding the wear the wearing of jewelry or makeup oh no it's simp balancing the wearing of jewelry and makeup it is simply saying do not let that be your only form of beauty don't let it be a fake Beauty make sure (30:41) there's a beauty on the inside that matches what you're showing on the outside when we look at First ptim Timothy Chapter 2 we will see the context of Paul's statement immediately before in verse 8 let's read it again 1 Timothy 2 and8 I desire then that in every place that men should pray lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling notice what Paul said I desire he did not say this was Yahweh or God's desires it was his personal desire and then the reason he could not condemn it per se is because it was not against the Torah at all it was not against any of the law of (31:31) God to wear makeup and jewelry now every woman and man should be modest we are to be a good witness to others and not appear as the rest of the world appears however that doesn't mean a woman cannot wear a ring a bracelet an earring or a necklace these things can be worn to make a woman feel pretty as a symbol of something such as a wedding ring or just because they wish to look beautiful that day the focus of the person should not be on the jewelry or appearing beautiful the focus should remain on being a person following the (32:10) word now this leaves us with 1 Peter chapter 3 and you can go read that for yourself verse 1 through verse 7 and then 1 Peter 3 1-6 the focus of these verses is on Behavior and personal relationships not outward appearance we are we are to care more about how we interact with people than we do of how we look finally let's discuss this and we'll be done let's look at some scriptures that shows jewelry and makeup in a positive light how about that let's go to Isaiah 61 and10 get your Bible and read it Isaiah 61 and10 I will greatly rejoice in the (32:59) Lord my soul shall exalt in my God for he has clothed me with the Garment of Salvation he has covered me with the robe of righteousness as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress and as a bride adorns herself with jewelry amen here we see that bro both the bridegroom and the bride are dressed up they have jewels and it's all a good thing in fact it says that Yahweh clothed Isaiah with these exact garments like he was getting married the garments and the robe were beautiful now let's go to Ezekiel 16 and 11-13 get your Bible and read it Ezekiel (33:52) 16 111-113 and I adorned you with jewelry I put bracelets on your wrist and a chain on your neck see God never changes this is the same God he didn't just start hating jewelry and forbidding it he loves it he said I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head thus you were adorned with gold and silver God forbid did and your clothing was a fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth wow they would have got preached against in today's churches you ate fine flour and (34:42) honey and oil you grew beautiful and advanced to royalty once again we see Yahweh adorning with ornaments bracelets all of these things then in addition to those he gave them rich clothes while this is metaphorical of course it's to to it's only to point that we consider what Solomon was given when he followed Yahweh great wealth and extravagance now listen to what uh Solomon had given to him by Yahweh are you ready Yahweh did this pretty cool 2 Chronicles 1:14 through 15 Solomon gathered together chariots and Horsemen he had 1,400 chariots and (35:30) 12,000 Horsemen whom he stationed in The Chariot cities with the king in Jerusalem and the King made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as Stone was imagine that streets of gold and he made Cedar as plentiful as the Sycamore of the sheffa now let's go to 2 Chronicles 91 13-21 now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talant of gold besides that which the explorers and the merchants brought then it goes on and on and on and talks about what all he did with this gold notice the queen of sheba's (36:18) reaction to all of this in First Kings 104-5 and when the Queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon the house he had built the food of his table the seating of his officials the attendance of his servants their clothing his cup Bearer his burn offerings there was no more breath in her she couldn't believe it this was not some rag tag servant of the Lord this was a man that had been given extravagance from Yahweh for obedience to him Solomon had such riches and so many Fine Things it is highly likely that among all his treasures was much jewelry just like fine clothing like Peter said a woman should (37:07) not wear if that's truly what Peter meant this was all granted to Solomon by Yahweh if this was a sin would Yahweh have given such things not likely let's go to Ezekiel 28 13-1 17 this is speaking about Lucifer you were in in Eden the Garden of God every precious stone was your covering sardius topaz Diamond Burl onx Jasper Sapphire Emerald carbuncle and crafted in Gold were your settings and your Engravings on the day that you were created they were prepared for you you were an anointed Guardian cherub look at the coverings of one of yahweh's Creations a cherub he was (37:55) covered in precious jewels and gold and jewelry if such things was against the Torah then Yahweh would not have given him to the angels let's go to Luke 15 and 22 but the father said to his servants bring quickly the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet the best rope a ring on his finger signs of wealth and favor being given to the prodical son these are favorable things not sinful things do you understand that when you see the blessings of that's favor let's go to Daniel 529 then belshazzar gave the command and (38:41) Daniel was clothed with purple a chain of gold was put around his neck and a proclamation was made about him that he should be the third ruler in the Kingdom Daniel was given Rich clothing gold chain as a a symbol of favor there is no indication that Daniel refused these things because they were sinful let's go to Genesis 24:53 and the servant brought out jewelry of silver and gold and garment gave them to Rebecca and he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly jewelry here we see Abraham's servant giving jewelry to Rebecca as a sign of (39:26) favor while some may argue this was before the events of the golden calf we also know that Yahweh does not change if he didn't lik something at one time he wouldn't have liked it before or after finally let's go to Proverbs 25 and2 like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear why would Yahweh compare wisdom to gold and silver if it was e evil our conclusion is that it's not evil the heart of a man is evil and if that heart is evil it will use gold silver makeup or a Rolex watch or a (40:14) fancy hairo or a Neiman Marcus dress whatever it has to use it will use so we have come to the conclusion and we believe from every scripture we've read that it's perfectly okay for yahweh's people to be dressed in the finest to have the favor of His blessings upon their life he loves Beauty and we see no harm in being beautiful God bless you

Summary

Pastor Shane Vaughn examines whether Scripture prohibits Christian women from wearing makeup and jewelry. Drawing from his upbringing in a church that prohibited these practices, he evaluates five common arguments against personal adornment and tests them against biblical passages. He teaches that makeup and jewelry are not inherently sinful and that biblical warnings about outward appearance primarily concern vanity, immodesty, idolatry, inappropriate intentions, and misplaced spiritual priorities. The study distinguishes between the use of adornment in pagan worship and ordinary personal grooming. Vaughn argues that the Bible contains numerous positive examples of jewelry, beautiful clothing, and personal adornment, including descriptions involving Esther, Solomon, Israel, and the parable of the prodigal son. The central message is that Yahweh judges the heart, motives, and conduct of believers rather than declaring outward adornment sinful in itself
