Rom 14:5 proves why we shouldn't keep the Sabbath - doesn't it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJSWZcyE46k (00:00) hello Shane Von with first Harvest Ministries I want to address uh an objection that we get many times here at the ministry concerning our keeping of the Sabbath day most people love to go over in their Bibles to the book of um let me get you the Romans 14 chapter 5 where it says one man esteemeth one day above another and another esteemeth every day alike let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind and so therefore they use the (00:32) scripture they pull that little bullet out of the Bible and shoot us with their what I call Roman rocket um it's where they do drive by scripture shootings they take one verse which has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the Sabbath day and they shoot it and then before they give you a chance to explain the verse to them they're going off to their next shoot up today I would like to take that bullet away from those who (01:02) genuinely genuinely believe that Romans 14:5 is speaking of the Sabbath day now there's many of you watching me I could explain it till I'm blew in the face you're not going to listen just like I didn't for many years because you have a madeup mind but I have hope and I have faith that there are those watching that genuinely desire to know the truth so if you'll give me 5 minutes I will try to explain to you the truth truth (01:30) concerning Romans 14:5 would you grab your bible with me never believe anything I teach don't believe anything your pastor teaches don't believe anything anybody teaches you unless they can back it up with not just a scripture because I can take this Bible and make it say anything I want it to say so can you how can we do that it is called the practice of Isa Jesus now that's just a fancy theological term for (01:59) taking scriptures out of context you see I can take one verse out of the Bible and manipulate it and uh make it say anything we want to not do that we want to caution ourselves against that practice by practicing the opposite of iso Jesus which is actually exag Jesus that's where you take the subject and you go from Genesis to Revelation and you build the scriptural framework around it concerning the Sabbath day we (02:27) have done that we've gone from Genesis and shown where God created it and commanded it to be kept forever then we've gone to the prophet Isaiah and pro to you that the Sabbath day will be honored and kept during the Millennium reign of Yeshua hamashiach which is Hebrew for the Lord Jesus Christ now we've also gone on and shown many places where yua promoted the Sabbath kept the Sabbath and loved the Sabbath so much (02:58) that he took the abuse of the Sabbath and corrected the Pharisees and the Sadducees now if something's done away with why would you spend any time trying to correct it and reform it then after yua died we showed where the disciples would not even anoint his body because it was the Sabbath day then we've shown you where the apostles in the book of Acts alone in that book kept the Sabbath 85 times we've shown it to you then (03:28) we've gone into 1 Corinthians and then showed you where the early church was keeping the holy days and the high sabbaths so with that said we come to a strange verse in Paul's writings that at first glance seems to totally destroy the Sabbath day but is that what it's doing let's look and see can we get the context let's start at verse one of chapter of Romans chapter 14 you're going to find when we get to verse one (03:55) that in the Book of Romans chapter 14 this chapter is nothing the word Sabbath is never mentioned neither is anything in this chapter referring to the Sabbath day the whole chapter is about an argument that is going on in the early Church of the former pagans that have come into God's church under Paul's Ministry remember the book of Romans was writing to a bunch of Gentile Believers that have come into the true church of (04:28) Israel now from these former pagans comes a strange religion called paganism and paganism is known for its Adoration of astrology the planets and the heavenly bodies so much so that their practice continues even today in the New Age movement and people in this day businessmen call on astrologist to tell them what is a good day to make a business decision have the planets lined up uh many people that are seeking love (05:03) will call the astrologist or read their horoscope to find out what their lucky day is this week many people still adhere by the millions to this Pagan practice of astrology their days are controlled by this practice they will read the horoscope every morning to find out is today a good day for this or for that their lives are controlled by esteeming one day above another many people worship the gods of Heaven the (05:35) various uh Gods the various planets and they build their lives around those deities this practice found its way into God's Church let's read Romans 14:1 him that is weak in the faith receive ye but not to doubtful Arguments for one believeth that he can eat anything he wants to eat and who is weak eateth herbs now what Paul is saying here this entire argument that he is writing about has to do with food it has to do more technically with the days (06:15) of fasting now when you get in this chapter you're going to find out that the pagans had a practice their practice was called veganism which is the refusing of the eating of meat the pagans believe that we could have no pleasure in the eating of meat their religion lives on today and they did not understand why God allowed the eating of meat and so when the Pagan Christians came into the church many of them would (06:44) not eat meat they continued to eat vegetables they were vegan in their diet and yet Yahweh tells us exactly what meats we can eat he calls them clean food and so they come into the church and here they are eating meat they were weak in their faith they didn't understand the freedom that God had given us to eat meat clean meat however there were many in the church that were not weak in their faith they were not (07:13) Pagan in their practices they were eating clean meat and so what happened was when the Two Worlds the Israelites and these Gentiles that were coming out of gentilis into the church of Israel which is the Church of God they brought with them those practices of veganism and their love for astrology Paul is about to deal with both of these errors that were creeping into the church verse three let not him that eateth despise (07:48) another man's servant or judge another man's him that eateth not and let not him which eateth judge him that eateth not for God hath re received them in other words Paul is telling the Israelites do not condemn these pagans that are coming in and receiving Christ and connecting with Israel do not judge them so harshly for them refusing to eat meat give them time and then he's telling those that are coming into the (08:17) church now don't judge those that are eating meat because indeed clean food has been allowed by God now verse four who art thou that judgest a another man's servant to his own Master he standeth or falleth yay he shall be Holden up for God is able to make him stand now I want to ask you a question in those first four verses has there been any mention of Sabbath day has there been any mention of God's holy Sabbath is there any reference to the (08:51) keeping of Sabbath no the reference is to eating food the reference is to an argument that was going on in the early church concerning what days to fast on Paul is about to come into that argument now and tell them that arguing over um who's eating meat and who's not is just as fruitless as arguing over which days to fast on now I want to read to you something and this is not from my own thinking but this is from a book called (09:24) The Story of Christianity as written by husto Gonzalez a noted by Bible Theologian he tells us that in the early church there were indeed times set apart for the fasting over one's sins normally this was during two weekly days of fasting which the church had adopted from Jewish practice keep that in mind at an early date however some Christians began fasting not on Mondays and Thursdays you see there was a Jew a (09:57) Jewish tradition among the Israelites to fast on Mondays and Thursdays well the pagans came in and uh they were not keeping that tradition they were beginning to fast on uh Wednesdays and Fridays in honor of the crucifixion and the resurrection so this argument over fasting I'm still reading the quote from husto Gonzalez's book this argument over fasting was in the early church a great division so it was at this point in (10:31) history that this tradition began to change now we know that there was an argument over which days to fast the pagans came in and uh their lucky days or their preferred days if you will was Wednesdays and Fridays the Jews were arguing over Mondays and Thursdays so now Paul is going to address that argument just like he address the argument over whether you could eat meat or not let's go to everyone's favorite (10:58) verse verse 5 one man distinguishes one day above another another esteemeth every day just alike let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind now does that say anything about the Sabbath day absolutely not this whole chapter is about food the whole chapter the whole context now it says one man esteemeth distinguishes or holds in high regard these two days of fasting which was the argument in Paul's writing was over (11:39) these days he said listen guys don't argue stop these arguments remember the first verse of Romans 14 And1 don't have these arguments over whether you can eat meat or not or whether you should be fasting on Mondays and Wednesdays or Thursdays and Fridays or whatever because just because you've come in and the Jews regard Mondays and Wednesdays the pagans are or Mondays and Thursdays the pagans are regarding uh Wednesdays (12:07) and Friday stop this argument now I want to prove to you this has nothing to do with God's holy Sabbath because it says one man esteemeth one day above another ladies and gentlemen I render to you that it was not man that esteemed the seventh day of the week it was Yahweh himself he he esteemed that day we just keep it holy so never believe that this verse says what you've been taught that it says we in God's Church those that (12:42) observe the seventh day we don't esteem the seventh day he does and we just honor it God bless you have a wonderful day

Summary

This teaching addresses the common objection that Romans 14:5 abolishes Sabbath observance. Shane Vaughn argues that the chapter’s context concerns food disputes and voluntary fasting days among early believers rather than Yahweh’s commanded Sabbath. The sermon emphasizes proper biblical interpretation, continuity of Torah observance, and the enduring sanctity of the seventh-day Sabbath.
