Did Yahshua claim to be THE GREAT I AM ? Pastor Shane Vaughn teaches John 8:58 "Before Abraham Was" Shane Vaughn ——— First Harvest Ministries International 1 it is time to correct an error in church teaching many people read John CH 8 verse 58 erroneously and have done so for generations and it keeps leading to more messed up theology I'm referring to a verse of scripture that Jesus or yua as we call him said these words and I quote before Abraham was I am now trinitarians modalist and a variety of other theological camps take that statement from the mouth of Yeshua and create it or create doctrines that are built literally on that scripture supposedly they believe that when yua said before Abraham was I am that he was reiterating the same words or 2 verbiage that Yahweh used to Moses if you'll remember and fix going to look at all these scriptures we're going to open the Bible if you'll remember Yahweh told Moses when they say who sent you say I am sent you well it is assumed that when yua said those words before Abraham was I am that he was making the same Claim about himself making Yahweh one and the same with the sun is that true no it's not but don't take my word for it let's open our Bibles grab your Bibles and let's go look at John chapter 8 verse 58 I'm going to pull it up on the screen screen and we will read it together never 3 believe anything I teach always go to the word John 8:58 Jesus said unto them verily verily I say unto you before Abraham was I am now if you didn't read the scriptures above it or below it or all around it then you could definitely make that scripture say whatever you want it to say because brothers and sisters without proper exog Jesus you will make an explosion of a mess out of all of it however whenever he says I am the first thing you need to understand is who he was speaking to and unless you read this whole chapter you do not get a feel for this intense confrontation that is taking 4 place between yua the Messiah and a very strict group of Jews known as the Pharisees as you read the whole chapter and I suggest you do you're going to to realize that you have sort of U jumped in on a battle that is taking place between yua and these people and it is over uh their inability to know and accept that he is the Son of God in this argument you will find that they going back and forth is creating a tension that demands yashua to make an emphatic statement but here's the first question we need to answer answer when someone says in the Bible I am does that make them Yahweh does that 5 make them Creator God does that make them co-eternal co-equal and coexistent or pre-existent before they came to be in the flesh no so we're going to prove that right now let's look at the context here in that verse of scripture and let me show you the Greek words and then we'll go to the Hebrew word words we'll compare it all all right before Abraham was I am the word for I am is ego isn't that interesting that's where we get the word ego means all about me I am and that is the Greek word imy or ego imy keep that in mind as we continue our study ego imy is the word that is being used uh here 6 uh for the word that's my problem John 9 and9 I'm so sorry let's read that together I'm going to pull it up so you can see the Greek words as well some said this is he others said he is like him but he said I am he now who is talking here a blind man right there John 9 and8 and they which before had seen him that he was blind said is not this he that sat and begged some said this is he others said well he looks like him but he said the blind man said I am well surely we're not going to say that because he used the exact same look at your screen what words did he use right there ego iy so are 7 we now going to say that the blind man was claiming to be God or making himself equal with Yahweh no as a matter of fact notice how it's translated here ego imy is not translated I am but it's translated I am he now you know from the italics that that was not in the original it was added but yet in so many other places ego iy is not translated I am it's translated I am he and that is very important because you're going to need to understand that as we begin to peruse through these different verses so ego iy in those days uh was translated I am or I am the man or I am he and it was the way that 8 people said uh I am the one being referred to and that it was used that way in the Greek many many times and so that's why it's so hard for an English Christian that knows English to get these deep Treasures out of the word because we don't know how to rightly divide it go back to its original meanings um let's go look at Acts chapter 26 verse 9 the book of Acts 26 and verse 9 I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth now look at the very beginning ego okay I is the word being used there ego I but what Paul says is he uses the same 9 phrase of himself when he said that he wished all men were as I am so Paul is saying the exact same words that yua said that he said I wish that all men were as I am and he's using the exact same verbage there ego iy and what is he saying there I wish that all men were his eyes so is Paul now referring to himself as pre-existent or as God was the blind man saying that no egoy does not identify yua with Yahweh but it does draw attention to yua in the strongest terms possible he says what he's saying in ego Amy is I am the one I am he I am the one you must look at and listen to if you want to 10 know God and in in our current vernacular we'd say I'm the man in other words I am he I am the one being referred to in the other scriptures in the in the previous part of the chapter now let's go look at uh how the word I am occurs many other times in the New Testament as an identifying phrase for example yua taught that people would come in his name saying ego iy okay or they would come in his name saying I am he talking about the Antichrist he says that the Antichrist will say ego iy I am he and will deceive many he will say I am the one that the prophets were referring to I am the Messiah 11 I am the one that's what the Antichrist will say you can find that in Mark 13 and6 and Luke 21 and verse 8 and what yua is saying here is that many false Messiahs would come claiming to be egoy claiming to be that man claiming to be the one that the scripture prophesies would come as the Messiah of Israel now here's a few more examples of yua using ego iy and John 13 and9 John 18 and 5-8 and here yua identifies himself to the apostles on the boat Matthew 14:27 Mark 6 and 50 Mark or John 6 and 20 yua identifies himself to the Jews saying ego iy and then to his own disciples when they thought he 12 was a ghost He said egoy me was he saying I am Yahweh no he was saying I am he I am the one I am the one that is being referenced to and so in John 8:58 when he says I am if that phrase is translated I am he in so many other places why not here in John 8 58 here's the point in that language the common way of designating yourself was by using ego iy in other words I'm the guy okay you're not saying that you're pre-existent that you are Yahweh in order for the trinitarian argument to be true that yua saying I am makes him equal and pre-existent then his statement I am has to be equivalent to 13 yahweh's statement of I am let's see if that's the case let's go to Exodus 3 and verse1 14 and let's see if there're the same I AMS Exodus 3:14 we'll look at it together and Yahweh said unto Moses I am that I am and he said thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel I am hath sent me unto you all right so the New Testament I am needs to be equivalent to the Old Testament I am if this is truly what yua is saying let's look and see what yua is saying let's look at the Hebrew I am that I am haa Asser haa that is the Hebrew words I am the one who is you tell the children the one who is has 14 sent me Exodus 3:14 now if you compare John ego imy to Exodus 3:14 you're going to find first of all yua did not quote that full title he did not he did not say before Abraham was I am who I am he didn't say that he only says part of the phrase whenever you see that it is not even the same as the New Testament because yua doesn't say I am that I am he says I am so brothers and sisters the truth is there is no comparison to the one used in Exodus and the I am the ego iy that is used used in The Book of John you need to really grasp that so that we can go on to the next part of it now let's go 15 and look at the full verse of scripture and I want to show you exactly what Yeshua is saying to take all doubt out of your mind let's go and let's read John 8 so go back to John 8:58 we're going to break it down to do that let's run up here to I think verse number okay verse 28 there we go watch this then said yua unto them the Jews when you have lifted up the son of man then shall you know that what I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my father hath taught me I speak these things and he that sent me is with me the father has not left me alone for I do always those things that 16 please him now let's go here in verse 31 then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him if you continue in my word then you are my disciples indeed verse 33 they answered and to him we are Abraham's seed never in bondage to any man to any man how do you say you will make us free notice this conversation it's an argument Yeshua is telling them that he is the one sent by the father to set them free okay they don't want to believe it because they are Abraham's children and so as you keep reading this argument goes on to verse 36 if the son will make you free you're free indeed he is 17 consistently talking about the son that would make them the Jewish people free now as you keep reading I'm not going to read it all here but you will find out the intensity of this argument they were getting very irritated and they sought to kill yua and on and on and on and yosua now in verse 41 calls him Children of the devil and he said if God were your father you would love me for I came from God neither came I of myself in other words I was not pre-existing and made up my mind to come do this no the father sent me the son to set y'all free the lost sheep of the house House of Israel verse 18 44 but you're of your father the devil here we go yada yada yada yada yada and so anyway and now in verse 48 then answered the Jews and said unto him say we not well that you are a devil you're telling us that you're the Son of God that he sent to redeem us you are a devil and yua said in verse 49 I have not a devil I honor my father and you dishonor me now they get into the subject of Abraham verely verily I say unto you verse 51 if a man keeps my saying he will never see death then said the Jews unto him now we know that you have a devil Abraham is dead and the prophets are all dead but you 19 say if a man keeps your sayings he'll never taste of death are you then greater than our Father Abraham which is dead verse 53 is a pivotal scripture are you greater than our father Abraham the entire context from here forward is the Jews trying to prove that yua is no greater than Abraham that's the context keep that in mind and the prophets are dead who makest thou thyself verse 53 are you greater than Abraham which is dead and the prophets are dead what are you trying to Who Do You Think You Are yosua answered verse 54 if I honor myself my honor is nothing it is my father that Commandments 20 now verse 56 is pivotal your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day and he saw it and was glad now hold that thought in your mind Saints let's go back to the question they ask in verse 53 are you greater than our Father Abraham and he now says in verse 56 Abraham rejoiced to see my day and he saw it and was very glad yes I'm greater than Abraham why because I am the Lamb of God that Abraham saw in the future my day which is the Sabbath day or the 7,000th year when I would rule in Reign Over the Earth and Abraham would serve me Abraham saw my day the son of God's day the king the lord of the 21 Sabbath he saw it and he rejoiced so yes that makes me greater than Abraham because Abraham took a lamb he was willing to kill his own son because he knew the lamb was coming Yahweh stopped him from killing his son and Yahweh said I've provided myself a lamb in other words that lamb is coming the Son of God is coming and he will come to redeem his people Abraham saw by faith that coming day he saw me that's what yua said in answering their questions verse 57 is vital then said the Jews unto him you're not even 50 years old but you have seen Abraham they got it all wrong yua never said I've 22 seen Abraham he never said I pre-existed and saw Abraham he said Abraham saw my day not me he never saw me because I didn't pre-exist I wasn't back there with him he didn't see me but he saw my time the kingdom that was coming to the Earth the Lamb of God that would would take away the sins of the world he saw me and now there look how they're flipping the script on him in verse 58 do you want us to believe you saw Abraham he said no no no no verse 58 let's read it very very very important what yua says and what he doesn't say this is important before Abraham was or before Abraham ever came 23 into being I am he now here it's translated I am but remember ego iy in every other place is translated I am the one or I am he before Abraham ever existed I am the one that he saw in the future I am the one that he saw my day I am the one that was mentioned before he was ever born and where was that oh right here in Genesis 3:15 before Abraham was born I am the one that was mentioned in Genesis 3:15 and I will put enmity between thee and the woman between thy seed and her seed it will bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel Abraham saw Genesis 3:15 Satan's head being bruised he saw my 24 day and before Abraham ever existed I am the one that was spoken of that he had faith in and that was spoken before he was ever born he said no I didn't say I saw Abraham I said Abraham saw me my day when he brought his son up to mount Mariah it was a shadow of my day when he went to lay down his only begotten son it he saw me he knew that if he gave up his son that my father in Heaven would send his son he saw me he knew me he saw my day and yes I am greater than Abraham because I was what he lived for and now he told the Jewish people you say you're of your father Abraham and yet you're not 25 because if you were you would do the works of Abraham and you would see standing right before you what he saw standing down the road
