THE APOSTOLIC ASSEMBLIES OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL First Harvest Ministries International A DOCTRINAL TREATISE WHY THE NAMELESS ONE WILL NOT BE RESTORED Mercy Restores the Deceived — Justice Must Answer the Rebellion From the Desk of John Shane Vaughn Founder & Apostolic Overseer The Apostolic Assemblies of the House of Israel (FHMI) Issued to the FHaMIly and to all who have ears to hear A companion treatise to They Died in Another PREAMBLE Since the release of our teaching series They Died in Another, one question has come to my desk more than any other. It comes from sincere people who have grasped the magnitude of what YAHWEH intends to do, and who, having seen how wide His mercy reaches, want to know whether it reaches all the way to the bottom. The question is this: If YAHWEH intends to reconcile all things in heaven and in earth, why will Satan himself not be restored? I do not dismiss the question. It is a fair question, and it deserves a full answer rather than a nervous one. A doctrine that cannot survive its own hardest question is not a doctrine; it is a slogan. This treatise is my answer, set down in order, so that every elder, every teacher, and every member of this assembly may give the same answer, from the same Scriptures, with the same confidence. The short form of the answer is this: YAHWEH never runs out of mercy, and YAHWEH never runs out of justice. The deceived are restored by the first. The Deceiver is answered by the second. The long form follows. DOCTRINAL STATEMENT For clarity, we state the doctrine before we defend it. We affirm that YAHWEH's declared purpose is to reconcile all things unto Himself, whether in earth or in heaven (Colossians 1:20), and to gather together in one all things in Messiah in the dispensation of the fulness of times (Ephesians 1:10). We affirm that this reconciliation is wider than traditional Christianity has ever dared to proclaim: humanity will be restored, the deceived nations will be restored, the dead will rise, and even the fallen sons of heaven who were swept into rebellion by deception will face judgment, examination, correction, and, where repentance is found, restoration. We affirm that there is one exception to this restoration, and only one: the being we have called THE NAMELESS ONE — Satan, the adversary, the father of the lie. We deny that this exception is a failure, a limit, or an exhaustion of YAHWEH's mercy. We affirm that this exception is the completion of reconciliation, not its contradiction — because reconciliation that leaves justice unanswered is not reconciliation at all. I. EVERYTHING MUST RETURN TO YAHWEH Let us begin with what reconciliation actually means, because the whole error of the objection hides inside a shallow definition of that word. Reconciliation does not mean "everybody gets back in." Reconciliation means that everything which became disordered must finally return to divine order. "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." — Colossians 1:20 Read the verse carefully. The object of reconciliation is all things — creation itself, in its structure and its order. What was broken is to be mended. What was disordered is to be set right. Therefore: Every broken thing must be healed. Every captive must be released. Every lie must be exposed. Every debt must be settled. Every injustice must be answered. Every authority must return beneath the authority of YAHWEH. Now follow the logic to its end. If everything is truly going to return to YAHWEH, then justice must return to YAHWEH also. It would be an incomplete reconciliation to restore mercy while leaving justice violated. It would be an incomplete reconciliation to heal the victims while never addressing the one who knowingly created the destruction. It would be an incomplete reconciliation to forgive deception without ever judging the deceiver. YAHWEH is not merely loving. YAHWEH is not merely merciful. YAHWEH is also just — and His justice is not a mood He falls into when His patience runs out. It is His character. "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." — Deuteronomy 32:4 His mercy cannot cancel His justice, because both originate in the same perfect nature. Mercy and justice are not enemies who must be kept in separate rooms. They are partners in restoration. Mercy heals what sin damaged. Justice answers the one who did the damage. A reconciliation that does only the first has left half the work undone. II. THE DECEIVED CAN BE RESTORED The great distinction that runs through They Died in Another is the difference between those who were deceived into rebellion and the one who originated rebellion. This distinction is not something we invented to escape a difficulty. It is written into the law of YAHWEH and into the very prayers of Messiah. Hanging on the tree, YAHSHUA prayed concerning the men who put Him there: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." — Luke 23:34 Notice the ground of the plea: they know not. Their ignorance did not make them innocent, but it made them reachable. Paul, who had hunted the assembly with murder in his heart, explained why mercy found him: "Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief." — 1 Timothy 1:13 Here is the principle, and it governs the entire doctrine: Ignorance leaves room for instruction. Deception leaves room for revelation. Blindness leaves room for sight. Captivity leaves room for liberation. Someone who has been deceived can be brought before the priesthood, examined, instructed, corrected, and ultimately reconciled. This is the very work of the substitutionary priesthood we have taught. It is the principle of the leper outside the camp in Leviticus 13 and 14. When the priest goes out to the leper, the question he asks is never merely, "Did this man ever have leprosy?" Of course he did. That is why he is outside the camp. The question the priest asks is: "Is the plague still spreading?" If the rebellion has ceased — If the deception has been renounced — If the wound is healing — If submission to divine government has returned — then the priest pronounces him clean, and restoration becomes possible. The deceived son can come home. That is the glory of the plan, and we will not shrink it by one inch. III. BUT WHO DECEIVED SATAN? Now we come to the wall that the objection cannot climb. Every deceived being can point behind himself to the one who deceived him. Humanity points to the serpent. The fallen sons of heaven point to the one whose tail swept them from their place. Every captive has a captor. So ask the question of the Nameless One. Who deceived him? No one. Who tempted him? No one. Who blinded his understanding? No one. Who dragged him into rebellion? No one. Whose influence overcame him? No one. He was not caught in someone else's tail. He created the tail. He was not seduced by another adversary. He became the adversary. He did not inherit the lie. He fathered the lie. YAHSHUA, who knew him better than any man who ever lived, gave him the title that settles the matter: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." — John 8:44 Read that again slowly. He speaketh of his own. The lie did not come to him from outside. It came out of him. He is not a victim of the lie; he is its father. And that single fact changes everything, because every mechanism by which the deceived are restored — instruction, revelation, sight, liberation — presupposes a deception that came from outside the one being restored. There is no outside for the Nameless One. He is where the deception begins. IV. FULL KNOWLEDGE CREATES FULL RESPONSIBILITY YAHWEH's law does not treat all sin as equal, and neither does His Son. Responsibility is measured by what a person knew, what he held, and how far his influence reached. "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." — Luke 12:48 In the same passage, YAHSHUA says the servant who knew his master's will and did not do it shall be beaten with many stripes, while the one who knew not shall be beaten with few. The measure of the judgment is the measure of the knowledge. Three things increase responsibility before YAHWEH: Knowledge increases responsibility. Authority increases responsibility. Influence increases responsibility. And the Nameless One possessed all three in a measure no other created being ever held. Ezekiel's lament over the king of Tyrus, which in the prophetic pattern we have taught reaches past the human king to the anointed cherub behind him, describes him thus: "Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty." — Ezekiel 28:12 "Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of Elohim; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire." — Ezekiel 28:14 Full of wisdom. Anointed. Set there by YAHWEH Himself. Upon the holy mountain. This is not a being who stumbled in the dark. This is a being who stood in the light of the throne and rebelled with the light in his eyes. Therefore the Nameless One cannot stand before YAHWEH and plead ignorance. He cannot say, "I did not understand." He was full of wisdom. He cannot say, "Someone deceived me." There was no one. He cannot say, "I was only following orders." He gave the orders. He possessed knowledge. He possessed authority. He possessed influence. And with his eyes wide open he chose rebellion. That is why his judgment differs from the judgment of those he deceived. Not because YAHWEH loves him less, but because YAHWEH judges righteously, and righteous judgment weighs what a man knew. V. PRESUMPTUOUS SIN Torah itself draws the line that this doctrine rests upon. Numbers 15 sets before us two kinds of sin and two entirely different outcomes. For the sin of ignorance, there is an offering: "And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering. And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly." — Numbers 15:27–28 For the sin of the high hand, there is no offering at all: "But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth YAHWEH; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Because he hath despised the word of YAHWEH, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him." — Numbers 15:30–31 Mark the last clause: his iniquity shall be upon him. There is no substitute, no transfer, no covering. The responsibility stays where it was born. This is not accidental failure. It is not blindness. It is not misunderstanding. It is high-handed rebellion — sin committed in full sight of the law, with a raised fist toward the Lawgiver. The rebellion of the Nameless One was precisely that. He knew. He understood. He held authority. And still he rebelled. Therefore the question concerning Satan is not a harder version of the question concerning deceived humanity or deceived angels. It is a different question altogether. There is nothing left to reveal to him that he did not already know. There is no blindness left to remove that caused his original fall. There is no higher deceiver from whom he must be rescued. He is the deceiver. And Torah has already told us what becomes of the high hand. VI. WHY JUSTICE REQUIRES HIS END Here we arrive at the deepest reason, and I want every reader to sit with it, because it is the hinge of the whole treatise. Suppose YAHWEH restored the Nameless One exactly as He restores those the Nameless One deceived. Suppose the architect of the rebellion received precisely the same final treatment as the ones he built the rebellion out of. Then ask: What would become of justice? Who would finally bear responsibility for the rebellion? Who would answer for the corruption introduced into heaven? Who would answer for the deception of the angelic host? Who would answer for the deception of Adam's race? Who would answer for millennia of accusation, destruction, and spiritual captivity? If the author receives the same ending as his victims, then responsibility has vanished from the universe. It was passed backward from the deceived to the deceiver, and then — nothing. It simply evaporated. No one answered for it. And if responsibility disappears, justice disappears with it. That cannot happen. Not in the universe of a Elohim who declares that all His ways are judgment. YAHWEH's justice must be vindicated just as surely as YAHWEH's mercy must be displayed. A throne that forgives everything and answers nothing is not a throne of righteousness; it is a throne of indifference, and the Scriptures know no such throne. Therefore there must finally be a place where the passing of responsibility stops. Humanity can point backward to deception. The deceived angels can point backward to influence. Those caught in the rebellion can point backward to the one who led them. But eventually the trail reaches its beginning. It reaches the one who cannot point behind himself, because there is no one behind him. There is no one behind Satan. That is why we teach it in one sentence: JUSTICE ENDS WHERE SIN STARTED. VII. THE AZAZEL GOAT Torah did not leave us to reason this out unaided. It painted the whole picture once a year, on the Day of Atonement, for anyone with eyes to see. Leviticus 16 sets two goats before the high priest. Lots are cast. One goat is for YAHWEH and is slain as a sin offering. The other is for Azazel, and it is not slain at the altar at all. "And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness." — Leviticus 16:21–22 Now observe the order of events, because the order is the doctrine. By the time the high priest lays his hands on the live goat, the blood has already been carried into the Most Holy Place. The sins have already been dealt with in the sanctuary. The people are cleansed. The camp is cleansed. The priesthood is cleansed. The altar is cleansed. And yet the day is not finished. Something remains. The responsibility for the contamination — the guilt itself, confessed by name — must be placed upon a head and carried out of the camp, away from the people, to a place from which it does not return. Only then is the Day of Atonement complete. The Azazel goat bears responsibility away. This is the final picture of reconciliation, and it is a picture in two movements. Mercy cleanses the victims. Restoration heals the deceived. Judgment corrects the rebellious. Truth destroys the deception. And then, at the last, responsibility returns to its source and is carried out of the camp forever. The Nameless One will bear the final responsibility represented by Azazel — not because YAHWEH failed to reconcile creation, but because this is how YAHWEH finishes reconciling creation. Atonement was never complete with the blood alone. The Scripture says so. It is complete when the goat has gone into the land not inhabited and the camp is clean behind it. VIII. SATAN'S REMOVAL IS PART OF RECONCILIATION This answers the objection from Colossians 1 directly, and I want to state it as plainly as I can. If everything is reconciled, how can Satan be removed? Because reconciliation does not mean preserving everything that caused the disorder. Reconciliation means restoring the whole creation to divine order. Consider a body with a cancer in it. When the physician heals that body, does healing require him to preserve the cancer? Of course not. Removing the cancer is the healing. To leave it in place, in the name of "keeping everything," would not be mercy to the body. It would be the death of the body. So it is with the Nameless One. His removal is not the failure of reconciliation. His removal completes reconciliation. Everything Satan deceived is rescued from him. Everything Satan corrupted is cleansed. Everything Satan divided is reunited. Everything Satan held captive is released. Everything Satan accused is vindicated. And finally Satan himself is removed from the creation he corrupted. The prophets saw the end of it, and they did not describe a restoration: "Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more." — Ezekiel 28:18–19 Never shalt thou be any more. Notice, too, where the fire comes from: from the midst of thee. His own iniquity is the fuel of his own end. Responsibility has gone back to its source and consumed it there. And the writer of Hebrews tells us that this was the purpose of Messiah's death from the beginning: "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." — Hebrews 2:14–15 Two verbs. Destroy him. Deliver them. The same death does both. That is not a contradiction of reconciliation. That is reconciliation — the captives freed and the captor ended, in one act. Then the books balance. Then the sanctuary is clean. Then the family is restored. Then the government is secure. Then justice has been satisfied. IX. MERCY GETS THE VICTIMS — JUSTICE GETS THE AUTHOR If a member of this assembly can carry away only one section of this treatise, let it be this one, because it is the simplest way to hold the whole doctrine in the hand. Mercy follows the damage backward. Mercy restores humanity. Mercy restores the nations. Mercy restores the deceived. Mercy restores the sons of light who were carried away by another's influence. Mercy keeps walking backward through the history of the rebellion, and at every step she asks the same question: "Who deceived you?" And every deceived being has an answer. Every one of them can point behind himself. So mercy keeps walking. Until at last mercy reaches the beginning of the trail. And there stands one being who cannot point backward. YAHWEH asks: "Who deceived you?" Silence. "Who tempted you?" Silence. "Who blinded you?" Silence. "Who commanded you to rebel?" Silence. Because there is no one else. The trail has reached its source. And at that moment, mercy has completed her work. There is no one left behind him for her to go and find. Now justice must complete hers. X. EVERYTHING RETURNS TO YAHWEH — EVEN JUSTICE This is the grand conclusion, and it is the conclusion the Scriptures themselves reach. When the plan is finished, everything must return to YAHWEH. Every son. Every kingdom. Every authority. Every captive. Every truth. Every righteous judgment. Every act of mercy. And justice itself must return fully vindicated to YAHWEH. If the Nameless One escaped responsibility for what he knowingly originated, then there would forever remain one unresolved injustice in the universe — one wound in the order of creation that was papered over rather than healed. And therefore reconciliation would remain, by definition, incomplete. But YAHWEH will leave nothing unresolved. The deceived will be restored. The ignorant will be taught. The blind will see. The captives will be released. The rebellious will be corrected. The fallen will be examined. And the author of the rebellion will finally bear responsibility for what he authored. That is Azazel. That is justice. That is reconciliation. And that is why the Nameless One will not be restored. OBJECTIONS ANSWERED Because this treatise will be read by teachers, I answer here the objections most likely to be raised against it, so that no elder is caught unprepared. Objection 1: "If YAHWEH's mercy has limits, then it is not infinite." YAHWEH's mercy has no limit in its reach — it reaches every deceived creature in heaven and earth. But mercy has an object, and its object is the one who has been wronged, wounded, deceived, or held captive. Mercy is not a substance that YAHWEH sprays over creation without regard to what it lands on. It is a work directed at victims. The Nameless One is not a victim. There is no deception in him to remove, no captor from whom to free him. Mercy has not been withheld from him; mercy has simply reached the end of the trail, where there are no more deceived to find. What remains at that point is not mercy's failure. It is justice's turn. Objection 2: "Doesn't 'all things' in Colossians 1:20 have to include Satan?" "All things" are reconciled to divine order. The removal of the disordering agent is how the whole is brought to order. Ezekiel 28 and Hebrews 2 describe the end of the Nameless One with the words destroy and never shalt thou be any more, and those texts stand in the same Bible as Colossians 1. The reading that harmonizes them is ours: all things restored to order, and the source of disorder carried out of the camp. The reading that makes Colossians 1 cancel Ezekiel 28 is not harmony; it is amputation. Objection 3: "Couldn't Satan repent?" Repentance is turning from a lie toward a truth one did not previously possess or obey. The Nameless One possessed the truth in full — full of wisdom, upon the holy mountain, in the presence of the throne — and rebelled against it with a high hand. There is no truth to reveal to him that he did not already stand in. Torah answers this precisely in Numbers 15: for the sin of ignorance there is an offering; for the sin of the high hand there is none, and his iniquity shall be upon him. We did not draw that line. Moses did. Objection 4: "This sounds like the old doctrine of eternal torment coming back in through the side door." It is the opposite. The old doctrine consigned the deceived to endless torment — billions of Adam's children who never had their eyes opened. We reject that root and branch. Every deceived creature is within the reach of the priesthood and the restoration. What we teach is that the one being who deceived them all, with full knowledge and full authority, will bear the responsibility for it and be removed from the creation he corrupted. That is not the resurrection of a cruel doctrine. That is the Day of Atonement, read the way Moses wrote it. THE FINAL DECLARATION The world was deceived. The angels were deceived. Adam's race was deceived. The nations were deceived. But the Deceiver was not deceived. He knew. He saw. He understood. He possessed authority. And he rebelled anyway. Therefore every victim of his deception may ultimately be brought home — but the author of the deception must answer for the deception. The sins return to their source. The responsibility returns to its source. The judgment returns to its source. The Azazel bears it away. And when that final act of justice is finished — EVERYTHING HAS RETURNED TO YAHWEH. His creation. His sons. His government. His mercy. His righteousness. And finally — HIS JUSTICE. Mercy will have saved everything that could be rescued from the rebellion. Justice will have answered the one who knowingly began it. And YAHWEH will truly be ALL IN ALL. "And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that Elohim may be all in all." — 1 Corinthians 15:28 Rev.
